Project HOPE company history timeline

1960

Finally, on September 22, 1960, the SS HOPE set sail from San Francisco bound for Indonesia.

Reaching Indonesia in late 1960 with 100 doctors and 150 nurses aboard, Hope’s first voyage was a public relations success, receiving significant public and political attention back home.

1961

Director Frank P. Bibas captured the inaugural trip of the SS HOPE in a documentary titled Project HOPE. The film won the 1961 Academy Award for best short documentary.

1970

1970’s – Expansion to land-based programs, and is the only United States private volunteer organization to work behind the Iron Curtain to improve health services to children in Poland.

1974

While the SS HOPE was retired in 1974, the spirit of its voyages lives on in HOPE's land-based programs and through the testimony of the HOPE Alumni.

Upon Hope’s return from Brazil in 1974, where it had spent the previous two years, it is thought that around 2500 American doctors, nurses and medical technicians served on it.

Since 1974, Project HOPE has been conducting land-based programs, carrying on the legacy of Doctor Walsh.

1980

1980’s – Combatting infectious diseases extends to HIV/AIDS, with prevention programs launched in Malawi that eventually reach more than one million people.

1981

Founded in 1981, Health Affairs is the leading journal of health policy thought and research in the United States.

2004

Project HOPE has responded to every major disaster since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, often staying beyond our initial response to help address health concerns as communities rebuild.

2010

2010’s – HOPE volunteers continue our legacy of improving global health through hands-on medical training for local health care workers, transforming health care delivery for entire communities.
