The Free Software Foundation was founded by Richard Stallman in 1985 and Stallman’s personal web site is an interesting read if you happen to have some spare time.
1992: R development begins as a research project in Auckland, NZ by Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka
1993: First binary versions of R published at Statlib
In 1993 the first announcement of R was made to the public.
So, just a little bit more history here, in 1993 Bell Labs gave a corporation called StatSci which became Insightful Corporation, an exclusive license to develop and sell the S language.
1995: R first distributed as open-source software, under GPL2 license
1997: CRAN founded (by Kurt Hornik and Fritz Leisch)
And R-devel, which is a more specific mailing list for people who are doing development work in R. 1997, what's called the R core group was formed.
The fundamentals of the S language itself has not changed dramatically since the publication of the Green Book by John Chambers in 1998.
Version four of the S language was released in 1998.
And it's worth nothing that in 1998 the S language won the association for repeating machinery software system award.
1999: First in-person meeting of R Core team, at inaugural Directions in Statistical Computing conference, Vienna
Finally, in 2000 R version 1.0.0 was released to the public.
2001: R News founded (later to become the R Journal)
If you want to know my general views on the usefulness of R, you can see them here in the following exchange on the R-help mailing list with Douglas Bates and Brian Ripley in June 2004:
Insightful sold its implementation of the S language under the product name S-PLUS and built a number of fancy features (GUIs, mostly) on top of it—hence the “PLUS”. In 2008 Insightful was acquired by TIBCO for $25 million.
2015: R Consortium founded, with R Foundation participation
