The Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania began in 1923 in Hobart, as a club for motoring enthusiasts, at a café meeting in Hobart between devotees of this new and liberating form of transport.
In 1927, it comprised a part time officer equipped with a motor cycle.

The RAASC March Tune 'Wait for the Waggon', itself taken from the RASC, has been retained. It was approved by the Colonel-in Chief, His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester, and was officially notified in Army Order No 36, 1946.
In 1947 the Service was disbanded, with a Directorate of Transportation being established within the RAE with the responsibility for water transport, terminal operations and movement control.

The Royal Australian Corps of Transport is a corps within the Australian Army. It was formed in 1973 and is responsible for the operation of army surface transport assets.

She received the title Princess Royal from The Queen in June 1987; she was previously known as Princess Anne.
In 1994 The Queen appointed Her Royal Highness a Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
The RACT in 2000 has a Regular Army strength of approximately 300 officers and 1,800 other ranks and a General Reserve strength of approximately 180 officers and 1,300 other ranks.
She was invested in the Order at a ceremony at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh in June 2001.

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, was announced to Corps members as the current Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Australian Corps of Transport on the 17th of March 2011 at the 2011 Corps Conference.
