The origins of XM Satellite Radio date to 1988, when a consortium was formed to buy a license for satellite broadcasting of telephone, fax, and data signals.
In 1990 AMSC announced that a $100 million satellite would be built for it by Hughes and launched by the mid-1990s.
It was one of just two licenses the agency granted, the other going to a firm called CD Radio, Inc., which had been working since 1990 on developing the digital radio concept.
On December 7, 1992, Satellite CD Radio, Inc. changed its name to CD Radio Inc., and Satellite CD Radio, Inc. was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary.
1992 In anticipation of future training products in the next few years, including bark collars and remote trainers, the company name changed to Radio Systems Corporation.
There were now several different companies seeking to create satellite radio networks, and in 1993 CD Radio bought one of them, Sky Highway Radio Corp., for $2 million.
By 1994 the company had spent $10 million on development costs, but had accumulated a deficit of $9.5 million.
AMSC's first satellite was launched in April 1995 from Cape Canaveral.
In April 1996 AMSC reported that it was close to bankruptcy, but it was bailed out when Hughes and several other firms granted it a $225 million line of credit.
In late 1998 Apollo Management L.P. bought $135 million worth of new stock shares and took an option to buy $65 million more within a year.
On November 18, 1999, CD Radio Inc. changed its name to Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.
CD Radio soon announced plans to begin broadcasting in 1999, nearly ten years after the firm had been founded.
1999 PetSafe Limited, our marketing partner for European sales, joined our company, allowing us to market internationally under the PetSafe brand name.
1999: Initial public offering takes place on the NASDAQ.
In June 2000 Sirius arranged for $150 million in new credit from Lehman Brothers, which would become available after its system was successfully demonstrated.
The company was now planning to offer 100 channels of programming, with a start date of late 2000 projected.
Launching Satellites in 2000
In early 2001, while it projected that broadcasting would start in the summer, Sirius sold additional stock worth $230 million.
By the end of 2001, XM had signed up close to 30,000 subscribers.
On February 14, 2002, Sirius launched service to four states, and coverage was extended to the rest of the country by July 1.
2002: Nationwide radio service begins.
XM's radios were initially sold as aftermarket items for cars, built by Sanyo, Pioneer, and others, but they were soon offered as options on 2002 Cadillac Seville and Deville models.
For fiscal 2002 the firm reported sales of $20.2 million and a loss of $495 million.
2003 Hunting enthusiasts got access to a line of hunting and training products as part of the newly formed SportDOG® Brand.
In early 2004 the company announced that it would begin broadcasting local traffic and weather information in 21 United States cities.
2005 Our catalog expanded to include pet doors and chainlink kennels with 2 new acquisitions, Fencemaster and Reilor Holdings’s Staywell, LTD., the largest pet door manufacturer in Europe.
2008 Training products from Contech, Inc., MultiVet International, Inc., and Lucky Dog Equipment expanded our catalog.
2009 Pet Porte Ltd. microchip pet doors joined our pet door portfolio.
2010 Radio Systems expanded into 6 new locations and added 200 new associates with several acquisitions.
2011 PetSafe Brand launched the first annual Bark For Your Park™ campaign for United States cities to compete to win money to build a dog park.
2015 Invisible Fence grew to 289 dealerships across 7 countries.
2016 Piddle Place™ pet potty products joined our house training category.
