1999

But text messaging really began to start taking off in 1999 when users started texting across different carrier networks.

In 1999, with customer satisfaction and technical skills carried over from the repair business, and the engineering skills from the IT operations, Jeffrey founded RCS Professional Services.

2002

MMS picture messaging was introduced in 2002 to deliver various improvements, but the technology never gained the same traction as SMS, currently making up less than 5% of global mobile messaging traffic.

2003

2003 - American Idol utilizes shortcode text messaging as part of the first “Text to Vote” campaign.

2007

June 2007 - First iPhone released.

2008

February 2008 - GSMA becomes project home for RCS.

RCS has been through a whirlpool of developments ever since its initial phases going back to 2008.

2009

May 2009 - WhatsApp Founded.

2012

In 2012, RCS exited the incubator-like stages of the project and was introduced to mainstream audiences, with MetroPCs becoming the first US carried to support rich communication services under the GSMA’s joyn brand.

2013

By 2013, RCS was already expanding across all North American carriers, and although the technology’s main concern was with the ability to be globally-implemented, things were starting to considerably change.

At the end of 2013, the IBM Blue Gene and the Katana Cluster were retired, after 8 and 6 years of service respectively

2014

In March 2014, the Scientific Computing and Visualization (SCV) group was renamed the Research Computing Services (RCS) group as part of expanding its scope to include full support for the BU Medical Campus

In 2014, RCS became an international phenomenon with the release of Jibe, a cloud company created for global implementation that offered an RCS hub service.

2015

April 2015 - Google launches Project Fi, later known as Google Fi - a phone plan by Google.

In July 2015, Samsung partnered with T-Mobile to upgrade their messaging services.

Glenn Bresnahan, Executive Director of Research Computing Services stepped down from the directorship on July 1, 2015

In September 2015, Google acquired Jibe Mobile, a cloud start-up that, among other things, was working on RCS. Through Jibe, Google is now pushing RCS as the de facto future messaging standard to replace SMS.

2016

November 2016 - Google announces a partnership with Sprint to bring RCS to all android devices on its network via the Messenger App for Android and the Google Jibe platform.

In 2016 the GSMA released the ‘Universal Profile’ which defines a fully interoperable standard for advanced communications, which networks can implement to handle RCS messages.

2017

January 2017 - The CTIA updates Application-to-Person A2P messaging standards in preparation for the use of 10 DLC (10-digit long codes) as bulk text messaging phone numbers.

At the end of January 2017, a major update was done to the Shared Computing Cluster adding 95 Nodes (86 of them Shared) and bringing the total to 585 Nodes (316 of them Buy-in) and 11,132 Cores (6,008 of them Buy-in)

July 2017 - RCS Universal Profile 2.0 Released.

In the spring of 2017, RCS Technology was purchased by Universal Electronics Inc., providing an international strength in manufacturing, and global reach in the consumer electronics industry.

2018

May 2018 - RCS Universal Profile 2.2 Released.

November 2018 - Google rebrands it's phone plan, Project Fi as Google Fi.

December 2018 - FCC classifies texting as an information service, not a telecom service.

The end of 2018 had RCS expanding into the African market, but also creating a significant impression in the marketing industry, as more partnerships were announced.

2019

January 2019 - Google announces the launch of RCS on the Google Fi network.

August 2019 - Verizon becomes the first Tier 1 carrier to roll out a commercial 10DLC product.

October 2019 - RCS Universal Standard 2.4 Released.

November 2019 - Google begins rolling out RCS to Android users in the UK and France.

With a growing user base already in excess of 174 million users worldwide, 2019 is expected to be the year when consumers and businesses start to really expand into using RCS.

The same statistics show estimate that by the end of 2019, rich communication services will reach 1 billion active users.

2020

Q1 2020 - AT&T, Sprint, & T-Mobile set to release their own commercial 10DLC products.

2021

Yet the study’s forecast that speaks most of the future domination of RCS states that by the end of 2021, application-to-person SMS/RCS business messaging will be worth $74 billion.
