1849

Doctor Blackwell faced years of discrimination before graduating first in her class from Geneva Medical College in New York in 1849.

1857

In 1857, Doctor Blackwell opened the New York Infirmary for Women and Children with a mission to provide positions for women physicians.

1861

In 1861, Barton left her job to dedicate her time to bringing supplies to soldiers and tending to those wounded, sparking a life-long career in aiding those in times of need.

1864

Challenging the prejudice that stopped so many Black Americans from pursuing careers in medicine, Doctor Crumpler graduated from New England Female Medical College in 1864.

1913

In 1913, Doctor Picotte opened a hospital in the reservation town of Walthill, Nebraska, providing better access to those in the area.

1960

When the birth control pill came on the market in 1960, Barbara was writing columns for women’s magazines such as Brides and Ladies’ Home Journal.

1969

In 1969, she completed her first book, The Doctors’ Case Against the Pill, which would become the basis for the Senate Pill Hearings on the safety of this form of birth control.

1970

The 1970 Senate Pill Hearings brought women’s voices to Congress for the first time.

1972

In 1972, Belita Cowan created Her-Self, which became the leading newspaper of feminist health.

1974

In 1974, she was invited to present her findings at a Senate hearing on DES, and became the first women’s health activist ever to testify as an expert witness.

1975

In 1975, Mary helped organize the first national women’s health conference, which brought thousands of women to Harvard’s campus.

1978

In 1978, she became the NWHN's first Executive Director.

The FDA responded to our action, and in 1978, the first comprehensive patient package insert was distributed to women using oral contraceptives and other estrogen-containing drugs.

1996

The group became part of MedPartners in 1996 and was joined by Northwest Perinatal Center.

1999

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, and led by the President and Chief Executive Officer, Doctor Richard C. Zane who has served in this capacity since 1999 when the organization was founded.

After operating as part of a managed care system for 2½ years, the group separated from MedPartners and became Women’s Healthcare Associates, LLC (that’s us–WHA) in 1999.

2009

Unified Women’s Healthcare was founded in 2009 by two practicing OB-Gyns as a single-specialty management services organization to support Ob-Gyn practices with physician management and payor contracting services.
