Soil-side corrosion is one of the main integrity threats to Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs). Most of the ASTs bottoms rest on a sand pad. Quality of sand is a paramount to controlling soil-side corrosion of the ASTs. Further, even a good quality sand gets contaminated overtime. Thus, contaminants in the sand pore water and poor sand quality may lead to elevated corrosion. Objective of this work is to find combination of sand quality and pore water composition that leads to elevated soil-side corrosion of ASTs. The summer intern will help perform analysis and help setup several experiments for the scope defined here.

-Demand and availability of critical materials is one of the most urgent issues of the twenty-first century for the nations around the world. The United States has a large demand for the critical materials, but supply is limited and dependent upon the nations whose energy and security interests may not align with the US. Electrochemical methods present an opportunity to extract critical minerals from several sources of feed stock including electronic waste. SRNL has been conducting experimental studies to determine feasibility of extracting critical minerals from the e-waste. Provide support to Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) as a Computer Science, Information Technology, or Cyber Security Intern - Limited Service Employee (LSE) on the Savannah River Site (SRS), a US Department of Energy (DOE) facility in Aiken, South Carolina.
Responsibilities
The Computer Science, Information Technology, or Cyber Security intern will perform meaningful work in support of the SRMC organization. The selected Computer Science, Information Technology, or Cyber Security intern assist with various projects related to SRMC's IT or Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure, such as servers, networks, applications, etc. The selected intern will support:
• Conducting risk assessment and vulnerability analysis using tools like Nessus, etc.
• Performing field validation and supporting penetration testing results.
• Running system scans and generating reports using tools like Nessus, Splunk, Microsoft Defender to include artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning, etc.
• Implementation of security policies and standards using tools like Active Directory, Group Policy, etc.
• Providing technical support and troubleshooting for security improvements and issues
Additional Information:
The internship is expected to be a 10-12 week period from May 2026 until the end of July 2026. Housing is not provided, but reasonable rentals may be available through local university student housing offices. The selected candidate will be responsible for their own transportation.
A 40-hour work week is set and scheduled by the individual departments. SRMC utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), etc. Each workday has a 30-minute lunch. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate; no summer interns will be assigned to shift work; overtime is not available; Interns will be paid for site holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th) as applicable.
Assignments will be located in SRMC facilities in Aiken, SC. Public transportation is not available, and interns will be required to arrange their own transportation. A valid Driver's License, Registration and proof of automobile insurance is required for driving on the Savannah River Site.

Additional Information:
The internship is expected to be a 10-12 week period from May 2026 until the end of July 2026. Housing is not provided, but reasonable rentals may be available through local university student housing offices. The selected candidate will be responsible for their own transportation.
A 40-hour work week is set and scheduled by the individual departments. SRMC utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), etc. Each workday has a 30-minute lunch. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate; no summer interns will be assigned to shift work; overtime is not available; Interns will be paid for site holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th) as applicable.
Assignments will be located in SRMC facilities in Aiken, SC. Public transportation is not available, and interns will be required to arrange their own transportation. A valid Driver's License, Registration and proof of automobile insurance is required for driving on the Savannah River Site.
Resumes will be reviewed by the selection panel in January 2026. All selected applicants will be contacted by February or March 2026.
If you are selected to participate in the SRMC internship program, additional information will be requested such as: SRMC employment application, references and official transcripts. You will be assigned to SRS General Employee Training and Drug and Alcohol test appointments before badging and commencement of assignment.
Qualifications
Candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student at:
An accredited four-year university, and currently working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Must have completed their Sophomore year
In addition:
Must pass General Employment Training (GET)
Must pass Drug and Alcohol Testing (DAT)
These two items will be scheduled before the intern starts work at Savannah River Site.
Preferred Qualifications
A cumulative GPA of 2.5
Knowledge of general concepts of machine learning, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, classification, and regression, etc.
Basic knowledge of statistical analysis, testing, etc.
Data visualization skills, such as creating charts, graphs, tables, etc.
Ability to learn new technologies to include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and solve problems.
Good communication and interpersonal skills
