Reads and reviews research literature to generate innovative ideas for new product development.
Identifies production or post-harvest related problems within industry, reviews literature to learn possible solutions and uses the information to improve or develop product solutions.
Aseptic culturing techniques (including media).
Maintain greenhouse and lab areas in a clean and organized manner.
Maintain inventory and requisition supplies and chemicals.
Who We Are Looking For:
An individual with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in horticulture, environmental sciences, biology or botany is preferred.
An individual who has a minimum of 1 to 2 years greenhouse floriculture or CEA experience is preferred.
An individual with knowledge of greenhouse operations and management is preferred.
An individual who has experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and SAS statistics is beneficial.

In support of the forthcoming reinstallation of a major gallery of European paintings and sculpture ca. 1550 - 1700, the European Paintings and Sculpture team seeks an intern to assist in researching the objects to be displayed and updating / completing their online catalogue entries, including didactics, bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance. These 50 objects are, primarily, Italian paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The chosen candidate will: review the extant catalogue entries; consult the relevant curatorial, collections management, archival and conservation files; conduct research in the Ingalls Library and online; and reach out to external scholars, as needed. They will also edit and/or compose new didactics for each object, including “Did You Know?” facts, digital didactics, and wall labels.
Over the course of the internship, the selected candidate will update the Collections Online entries for the objects to be featured in the forthcoming reinstallation of the Reid Gallery of Italian Baroque Paintings and Sculpture. This includes the digital didactics, bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance for each object. Where appropriate, they will also write wall labels to accompany these objects in the galleries. By the end of the internship, every object will have updated and completed Collections Online entries and accompanying wall labels.
This internship will provide the intern with a behind the scenes look at how a curatorial department prepares for a reinstallation. They will also learn and/or develop their research skills though their work with curatorial files, archival sources, the library, and external scholars. They will also develop their writing and editing skills by reviewing extant, and composing new, didactics.

Types of skills learned over the summer may include, for example: plant and insect identification; microbial isolation and culturing; extracting, amplifying, and analyzing DNA; thermal and spectral phenotyping, micro-controllers for environmental monitoring. Interns will also learn about experimental design, data analysis in R, and science communication. Interns may work with other Holden Forests & Garden Departments, with opportunities for cross-training. In addition, all members of the Holden Forests & Gardens' (HF&G) intern cohort will have the chance to participate in professional development, such as workshops, scientific lectures, networking, and field trip experiences. All interns will have the opportunity to develop and present their research at HF&G's SEARCH symposium. This position is based at the Holden Arboretum campus' Long Center for Plant and Environmental Science in Kirtland, OH with occasional travel to the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, OH.
Position Details:

Key Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities of the Research Interns will include, but are not limited to:
* Work with supervisor to develop and complete an independent project which will be presented at the SEARCH symposium at the end of the internship
* Other duties as assigned
Summer Research Interns will conduct research under one of the following broad themes:
* Evolutionary Ecology - How does trait variation in natural populations shape their potential for evolutionary responses to climate change?
* Forest Health - How do plant diseases and infestations impact native trees and ecosystems?
* Plant-Microbe Symbiosis - How do microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions influence organismal and ecosystem resilience under climate change?
* Plant Physiological Ecology - How do plants manage and respond to climate stress, and how does this shape the future of plants on earth?
* Restoration Ecology - How do global change drivers, including climate change, affect the natural world and how can we employ restoration techniques to support healthy ecosystems?
* Soil Ecology - How do microbes in the soil shape plant communities and their function in the ecosystem?
* Population Ecology - How do microenvironments impact growth, survival, and distribution of tree species and structure forest types?

* Familiarity with Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or the ability to learn
* Reliable transportation and ability to get to both the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Gardens for various trainings, a plus

Preferred previous gowning experience for aseptic core.

GMP and/or GLP training is preferred.
Remain current with regulatory requirements and emerging industry trends.
