Perform a variety of laboratory, diagnostic, animal care, educational, and/or field duties.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Position forms part of a team focused on research, monitoring, and applied management to aid recovery of endangered and threatened seabirds/shorebirds. Our team works on two military bases, Naval Base Coronado and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Main goals of our work are to investigate ecological effects of changing ocean conditions and other factors on the reproductive success of California least terns and Western snowy plovers. Duties include monitoring, surveying and tracking nesting terns and plovers, using beach nesting bird monitoring techniques, mark recapture and radio telemetry, as well as performing data analyses, geographic information system mapping.
JOB EXPERIENCE
Some experience and/or certification in conducting laboratory or field-based research is preferred.
Experience with science communication or interpretation of scientific concepts preferred.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in biology, zoology, botany, or a related field or equivalent specialized training required.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Training in methodology and equipment used in the assigned area of biological research, animal care, diagnostics, social science, or science communication required.
Ability to operate moderately complex computer software programs required.

As an Applied Scientist in the Generative AI Service team, you will be leading the effort of building distributed, scalable, high-performance AI model training and serving systems in partnership with our applied scientists and software engineers. **What You'll Do:**
As an Applied Scientist in Generative AI Service team, you will be leading the effort of building distributed, scalable, high-performance AI model training and serving systems in partnership with our applied scientists and software engineers. You will dive deep into model structure to optimize model performance and scalability. You will build state of art systems with cutting-edge technologies in this fast evolving area. you will play a key role in shaping the future of Generative AI at Oracle, with an emphasis on Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multi-modality Models. Your contributions will be pivotal in delivering our new Generative AI-powered services for large scale enterprise customers.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Collaborate with product managers to translate business and product requirements into AI projects.
+ Collaborate with fellow technical leaders to ensure the successful and timely delivery of models and integration of services.
+ Coordinate with global teams to drive projects from research to production.
+ Develop new OCI services and features leveraging recent advances in generative AI, machine learning and deep learning.
+ Design and review the architecture of generative AI, including data, model, training, and evaluation, employing best practices.
+ Lead and mentor both junior and senior machine learning engineers.
+ Develop production code and advocate for the best coding and engineering practices.

**What You'll Bring: (Objective Minimum Qualifications)**
+ Have a **PhD** in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Linguistics or a related field with a dissertation, thesis or final project centered in Machine Learning and Deep Learning) by **July 2026.**
+ Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing scalable AI models for production.
+ Deep technical understanding of Machine Learning, Deep Learning architectures like Transformers, training methods, and optimizers.
+ Practical experience with the latest technologies in LLM and generative AI, such as parameter-efficient fine-tuning, instruction fine-tuning, and advanced prompt engineering techniques like Tree-of-Thoughts.
+ Hands-on experience with emerging LLM frameworks and plugins, such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, VectorStores and Retrievers, LLM Cache, LLMOps (MLFlow), LMQL, Guidance, etc.
+ Proven experience in designing data collection/annotation solutions and systematic evaluation necessary for developing and maintaining production systems.
+ Commitment to staying up-to-date with the field and applying academic advances to solve complex business problems, and bringing them into production.
+ Strong publication record, including as a lead author or reviewer, in top-tier journals or conferences
+ Reside in the United States and/or attend a university in the US.

The New Toxicology Evaluations Section (NTES) at the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) provides essential information on the hazards and risks posed by chemicals in the environment and consumer products, as well as develop new and scientifically valid approaches for understanding chemical hazards. These evaluations may be used to establish guidance levels or priorities for chemicals in drinking water, air emissions, sport fish, waste sites, and emergency response actions, as well as safer substitutes for chemicals. NTES's work provides important state guidance for regulators, policymakers, and emergency responders on harmful chemicals that otherwise would remain unassessed.
Under administrative direction of the Senior Toxicologist, Chief of the New Toxicology Evaluations Section, the Research Scientist IV (Chemical Sciences), under the working title as Pharmacokinetics Research Scientist, plans and conducts original research into the development and application of novel risk assessment methods that augment OEHHA's ability to perform timely evaluations of unassessed chemicals that have little or no toxicology testing in laboratory animals; serves as a subject-matter expert in pharmacokinetics who makes independent decisions on the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance of chemicals in human body and across human populations, as well as in the translation of complex data from in-vitro and other novel experimental systems to human exposures; applies new computational-toxicology approaches to develop hazard and dose-response assessments that can support regulatory standards for unassessed chemicals and chemical groups that are of high priority or emerging interest to California state agencies; and establishes collaborations with academic researchers on the development and refinement of novel risk assessment methods that use NAMs, works to build acceptance of these methods and results, and publishes scientific papers and technical reports.

OEHHA has a hybrid work environment that includes work in an office setting in a high-rise building and telework at home.
