Centific AI Research seeks a PhD Research Intern to design and evaluate speech‑first models, with a focus on Spoken Language Models (SLMs) that reason over audio and interact conversationally. You'll move ideas from prototype to practical demos, working with scientists and engineers to deliver measurable impact.
Scope of Work
End‑to‑end speech dialogue systems (speech‑in/speech‑out) and speech‑aware LLMs.
Alignment between speech encoders and text backbones via lightweight adapters.
Efficient speech tokenization and temporal compression suitable for long‑form audio.
Reliable evaluation across recognition, understanding, and generation tasks-including robustness and safety.
Latency‑aware inference for streaming and real‑time user experiences.
Example Projects
Prototype a conversational SLM using an SSL speech encoder and a compact adapter on an existing LLM; compare against strong baselines.
Create a data recipe that blends conversational speech with instruction‑following corpora; run targeted ablations and report findings.
Build an evaluation harness that covers ASR/ST/SLU and speech QA, including streaming metrics (latency, stability, endpointing).
Ship a minimal demo with streaming inference and logging; document setup, metrics, and reliability checks.
Author a crisp internal write‑up: goals, design choices, results, and next steps for productionization.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD candidate in CS/EE (or related) with research in speech, audio ML, or multimodal LMs.
Fluency in Python and PyTorch, with hands‑on GPU training; familiarity with torchaudio or librosa.
Working knowledge of modern sequence models (Transformers or SSMs) and training best practices.
Depth in at least one area: (a) discrete speech tokens/temporal compression, (b) modality alignment to LLMs via adapters, or (c) post‑training/instruction tuning for speech tasks.
Strong experimentation habits: clean code, ablations, reproducibility, and clear reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with speech generation (neural codecs/vocoders) or hybrid text+speech decoding.
Background in multilingual or code‑switching speech and domain adaptation.
Hands‑on work evaluating safety, bias, hallucination, or spoofing risks in speech systems.
Distributed training/serving (FSDP/DeepSpeed), and experience with ESPnet, SpeechBrain, or NVIDIA NeMo.
Tech Stack

As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department's highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department's robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. Seven Directions partners to support tribal communities to increase the capacity of tribal health systems designed to prevent and respond to the opioid overdose epidemic and address other health disparities, as well as conducting community-driven and community-designed health research. Our work includes culturally tailored technical assistance, community-engaged culture-centered research, evaluation, training, Indigenizing and decolonizing research, Indigenous data sovereignty, policy translation, convenings, and dissemination strategies. These services aim to improve Indigenous-serving organizations' and systems' data collection and epidemiologic surveillance capacity; increase implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies grounded in values respecting tribal sovereignty and cultural traditions; showcase models of tribal promising practices; and utilize Indigenous evaluation approaches.
This position (Payroll Title: Pro Staff Temp Position (E S)) is in the field of public health research. The position will focus on better understanding and improving Indigenous public health and prevention in the areas of opioid overdose, substance use, and mental health using epidemiological and social science frameworks. The Research Scientist (RS) is a key member of the Seven Directions team, works alongside senior team members and guides junior team members in implementing a variety of research, evaluation and training activities, including contributing to project design, grant writing, implementation and management of multiple research projects, IRB submission and modification, data analysis, manuscript development and dissemination. The RS will lead and provide collaborative support in deliverables related to opioid overdose prevention, Indigenous evaluation and broad capacity building and system strengthening in partnership with Indigenous communities. The RS will be focused on developing quantitative surveys and qualitative scripts for evaluation tracking, support evaluation data collection and analysis, and support final report writing. The ideal candidate will bring doctoral level experience working in research, evaluation or training with AI/AN communities as well as an understanding of and humility toward AI/AN historical, contemporary, and cultural contexts.
Responsibilities
Research study design, grant preparation, data analysis and scientific writing/publication (40%)
* The RS will work with Seven Directions team to plan and design opioid, substance use, mental health, or other Indigenous culture-centered research or technical assistance projects related to Indigenous evaluation, Indigenous health and wellbeing and more.
* They will take a significant part in project design and operations, including designing project phases; conducting scientific and grey literature reviews, environmental scans; developing interview scripts, project protocols, quantitative surveys; writing grey and scientific manuscripts.
* In collaboration with other team members. they will analyze data, formulate conclusions, and present research results in publishable formats, including written documents, presentations, or online modules.
* They will work with PIs and faculty to identify external federal, state, local and private grant opportunities.
Research and Project Management (30%)
* Lead and assist with project management activities, including developing and monitoring project timelines, ensuring work is successfully executed and completed within time frames to meet research objectives and communicate with diverse academic, practice and community partners.
* Develop research operations protocols and train staff in implementing the research activities.

Fifteen (15) months program duration with over 3000 hours of post graduate training
Close to 2400 hours of clinical training
Over 300 hours of didactics to include over an introductory bootcamp followed my weekly activities that include conferences, meetings, case presentations, ultrasound training, procedure lab or simulation.

The laboratory projects focus primarily on how neuromodulators (Dopamine, Norepinphrine, Serotonin, opioids) work to modulate circuits in the brain to ultimately, impact behavior. The laboratory also works at the cutting-edge to develop/engineer novel biological and hardware tools for engaging the brain to study behavior.
Two of NAPE's Principle Investigators, Dr. Michael Bruchas and Dr. Garret Stuber, are key personnel of a large P30 Center Grant, the "University of Washington Center of Excellence in Opioid Addiction Research". The purpose of the center is to provide shared resources that will enhance efficiency and facilitate collaborative research for the study of how endogenous and exogenous opioid signaling impacts brain circuit function with the goal of understanding opioid addiction mechanisms and developing novel treatments for drug addiction.
