Retail Technology Group company history timeline

1883

The cash register was invented in 1883 by James Ritty, who owned a saloon and wanted to find a way to stop his employees from pocketing money from customers instead of putting it into the business.

1909

The opening of the famous London department store, Selfridge’s, in 1909, marked the UK’s departure from small-scale shops into the department store age.

1937

The shopping trolley was invented in 1937 by Oklahoma supermarket owner Sylvan Goldman, evolving from the wire hand-basket as a solution to shoppers having to carry baskets that were too heavy.

1950

The shopping trolley didn’t arrive in the UK until 1950 at a Sainsbury’s in Croydon.

1987

In May of 1987, Greg Hall founded Retail Technologies, Inc. with one main goal in mind.

1989

In September 1989, HP introduced the first “personal” version of the HP LaserJet printer series, the LaserJet IIP. At half the size and price of its predecessor, Greg saw this as an opportunity to provide his customers with an even better solution.

DESIGN-R-LABELS for DOS was released in 1989.

1990

At its inception the core team was once a part of Javelin Corporation, who was once a leader in POS manufacturing, deployment and services during the 1990’s.

1999

February of 1999 saw the successful release of DESIGN-R-LABELS32 for Windows.

2002

After graduating from Harding University in 2002 with an MBA, Glen Hall, Greg’s son, rejoined him as the Vice President and Sales Manager of RTI. Glen has been an integral part of the product development and economic growth of Retail Technologies, Inc. ever since.

2003

RTG is headquartered in America’s heartland, within the city of St Louis Missouri and was officially formed in 2003.

With both the dot-com collapse and following economic recession, Javelin was forced to close their doors in 2003.
