In 1920, 16 Bethlehem, Pennsylvania business leaders, including a core group from Bethlehem Steel Corporation, acquired 205 acres of farmland lying along the Saucon Creek to establish a country club with “a golf links and other facilities for athletic sports.” It would be a family club.
Another story involves the 1951 United States Amateur conducted at Saucon Valley.
It was akin to the USGA installing a tree on the Inverness Club’s par-5 eighth hole in the 1979 United States Open to prevent the long-hitting Lon Hinkle from taking a shortcut down the adjacent 17th fairway.
Through the eight major United States Golf Association events, including the upcoming United States Senior Open in 2022, Saucon Valley Country Club has attained an enduring national stature.
