Position Summary: Incumbent serves as Patrol Officer for the Police Department, responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local laws, and serving and protecting individuals, their rights and property while performing the following duties: DUTIES: Monitors radio and other communication devices and responds to calls of distress and complaints of alleged unlawful activity, including assessing and bringing situations under control, taking statements from victims and witnesses, providing assistance, and calling social service organizations for assistance as needed.
Stops drivers for traffic violations, verifying licenses and registration data, conducting breathalyzer and field sobriety tests as necessary, issuing warnings/citations, and/or making arrests as warranted.
Regularly conducts proactive and reactive patrol of City streets and other designated areas, maintaining high visibility, and ensuring security of residences and businesses.
Investigates and reports suspicious or unlawful activities, and takes appropriate action to enforce applicable laws.
Responds to and investigates traffic accidents, including assessing extent of injuries, calling for emergency medical assistance, photographing/videoing and measuring accident scenes, taking statements from victims and witnesses, assisting reconstructionist, directing removal of damaged vehicles and ensuring area is clear.
Periodically assists with accident victims, and lifting victims onto stretchers and into medical vehicles as needed.
Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic when congestion occurs or as assigned.
Works with other emergency personnel during weather emergencies, notifying appropriate individuals, including City departments and utilities, regarding dangerous conditions, such as downed trees and power lines.
Participates in formal investigation of crimes, including searching crime scenes, collecting, preserving and protecting evidence according to prescribed procedures, and interviewing victims and witnesses.
Conducts legal searches of persons and property with and without a warrant.
Pursues, apprehends, searches and arrests suspects using only necessary physical force, advising them of rights and transporting to detention area.
Prevents individuals from injuring themselves or others by using physical restraint or appropriate weapons.
Intervenes, mediates and assists in resolving citizen disputes.
Transports individuals detained by the City to appropriate courts, detention and/or medical facilities.
Serves various legal documents, including summonses, court orders, and notices of hearings; returns documents to appropriate officials and courts.
Periodically testifies and gives evidence in court as required, including meeting with Prosecuting Attorney, preparing documentation, and reviewing case materials.
Maintains appearance and serviceability of assigned vehicles, uniforms, equipment, and weapons.
May be given special assignments, such as public speaking engagements or providing police escorts.
May serve on specialized law enforcement teams, such as SWAT tactical teams, Dare Officer, and/or K-9.
Recovers/inventories stolen property and checks status of stolen property.
Types case reports.
Performs booking procedures of detained individuals, including fingerprinting, obtaining background information, photographing, and searching individuals.
Periodically attends prescribed in-service and/or training programs for certification in specialized law enforcement areas as assigned or required.

JOB AND WORK REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or GED and certification or ability to be certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy as a law enforcement officer.

This measures abdominal (or trunk) muscular endurance.
While lying on his/her back, the candidate will be given one (1) minute to do as many bent leg sit-ups as possible.
300 Meter Run.
This measures aerobic power, or the ability to perform an intense burst of effort for a short time period or distance.
This component consists of running 300 meters as fast as possible (considered a sprint run).
Maximum Push-Ups.
This measures muscular endurance of the upper body.
This component consists of doing as many push-ups as possible until muscular failure.

A day in the life

Role Overview:

During a typical 12 hour shift, you will maintain the security of the unit as well as the safety of staff and incarcerated individuals, while ensuring daily activities and programs proceed on schedule. During the 2 week pay period, Correctional Officers will work 85.75 hours. This consists of 7 total shifts, including 1 weekend.
Salary:
This position starts at a $22/hour base pay + $1/hour of differential pay, equating to $1,972.25 biweekly or $51,278.50 annually. Candidates with relevant experience may qualify for a higher base pay. These figures do not account for any overtime pay an employee may earn.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
* Monitor assigned areas at various intervals for security of incarcerated individuals, count of incarcerated individuals, and security of buildings and grounds.
* Follow and ensure compliance with established security procedures.
* Manage incarcerated individuals in various work details including general clean-up of institutional grounds and buildings.
* Escort incarcerated individuals to and from various locations across the facility for food, medicines, work assignments, and recreation.
