1965

The rise of the private nursing home industry begins this year and doubles to more than 500,000 by 1965.

1981

In 1981, Paul and Terry Klaassen sold their home, borrowed money from friends, and bought and moved into an old nursing home in Fairfax, Virginia.

1981 The Klaassens open their first facility in Oakton, Virginia.

1985

In 1985, Sunrise Assisted Living opened two new Sunrise communities--Sunrise of Leesburg and Sunrise of Warrenton, both in Virginia--and the Klaassens debuted the first Sunrise training program for its employees to ensure that they understood and practiced the hallmarks of assisted living.

1988

In 1988, the first Sunrise prototype home opened in Arlington, Virginia.

1990

Prior to LCB’s founding, the company’s principals and many senior executives were part of Newton Senior Living, which was established in the mid-1990’s and grew to become the 16th-largest assisted and memory care living company in the United States.

1995

Reminiscence Neighborhoods, built around Sunrise's Reminiscence Program for the memory impaired, debuted in 1995.

1996

In June 1996, the company followed in the steps of other assisted-living providers, and made its initial public offering on the NASDAQ. Its revenues for that year were $47 million.

1997

In 1997, the company brought in $89 million.

1998

In 1998, that number increased to $170 million.

The acquisition also marked another big step for the company, part of the shift it had begun in 1998 from owning and managing facilities to just managing them.

2000

In 2000, Thomas Newell assumed the role of president of Sunrise, and the company introduced at-home assisted living.

2001

2001 Sunrise stock moves to the New York Stock Exchange.

2002

Legacy Senior Living was founded in 2002 by Barry Ray as Vision Senior Care Partners, a specialized senior living management organization.

2003

In 2003, Renaissance Marquis located in Rome, GA, became the first retirement community owned and operated by the company.

The company changed its name in 2003 to Sunrise Senior Living Inc. in order to reflect the full range of its short- and long-term elder care services.

2006

In 2006, Bryan Cook joined Mr.

2006: Continuing Diversification and Expansion

2011

LCB Senior Living was founded in 2011, and is headquartered in Norwood, Massachusetts.
