A Correctional Officer Cadet is responsible for the care, custody and supervision of inmates in a correctional institution. The work includes, but is not limited to, daily supervision of inmate occupational, vocational, rehabilitation and recreational activities. Cadets who excel at the job have an opportunity to earn a position in our Correctional Officer Academy, and transition into full-time staff with a variety of opportunities across our five facilities.
A new Western Massachusetts Correctional Officers Class Academy will begin on Dec. 1, 2025.
Work Schedule: A Cadet must be able to work a flexible schedule, any shift, any day of the week. This is a per-diem position paying $25 an hour.

Your role
As a Community Corrections Officer, you will join a dedicated and dynamic team focused on offender rehabilitation and enhancing community safety. What you'll do

Overview
The primary responsibility of the Campus Safety Officer is to be the first response to emergencies and other problems in the facility. Performs two campus safety security rounding's per shift including vehicular patrols of all Duncaster properties, and documents in current security software.

Responsible for installation, control, and performance of security lock down of entire facility as scheduled including locking all ground floor doors and windows and meeting all lockdown requirements.
Acts as a first responder to emergencies and other problems in facility and takes appropriate action.
Performs scheduled routine preventative maintenance as well as initial repairs and troubleshooting of resident and staff work orders and requests.
Communicates with supervisor, status of all assigned work orders.
Recognizes when others need assistance and offers to help. Assists individuals with information or directions whenever requested.
Contributes to meeting the fluctuating staffing needs of the department as evidenced by flexibility in own assignments and work schedules as evidenced by supervisor observation.
Follows all policies and procedures, annual mandatory in-services, required meetings, and all other conditions of employment are consistently met.

Education and Experience

5 years of experience in general maintenance work is required.
Must have a valid Class D driver's license with no major violations or restrictions.

Correctional Officers are responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates housed at the Worcester County Jail and House of Corrections.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintains custodial care and control of inmates by escorting or transporting them under restraint; patrolling facilities; making periodic rounds, head counts and security checks of buildings, grounds and inmate quarters; monitoring inmates' movements and whereabouts; and guarding and directing inmates during work assignments to maintain order and security in a correctional institution.
2. Observes conduct and behavior of inmates; notes significant behavioral patterns in order to prevent disturbances, violence, escapes or other crises such as suicides.
3. Notes and investigates suspicious inmate activity relative to contraband by searching individuals, vehicles, packages, mail and inmate quarters for weapons or other forbidden devices/objects to maintain prison security.
4. Develops working relationships with inmates by referring individuals to appropriate supportive services (e.g. medical, psychiatric, vocational, etc.) to aid in rehabilitation and to foster an atmosphere of cooperation between inmates and staff.

Observes departing personnel to guard against theft of Hospital property.
Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and other acts of suspicious instances. Records all incidents in writing or electronic media. Assists local authorities with investigation of incidents committed on Hospital properties. Reports all criminal acts to the Chief of Security and or local authorities. Assists Hospital staff as required providing protection and safety to patients or other individuals. Adheres to all general orders and or special orders as directed by the Chief of Security.

II. Position Qualifications:

Required:
1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
2. Obtain and satisfactorily complete the initial 8 hour Hospital Orientation Program and Annual Competency Reviews and any other training as may be occasionally mandated.
3. Obtain and satisfactorily complete annual (or biannual as applicable) re-certifications in: CPR (Cardio Pulmonary resuscitation; Fit testing for Tuberculosis Respirator Masks; Hazard Communication Program; Annual Fire Suppression and Hazard Recognition Training; Annual Self Defense and Management of Violent Situations Training; Annual Training and physical completion for the Emergency Response Team; and other training as may be determined by the Supervisor of Public Safety.
4. Avade 2 (restraint) training completion required within 6 months of hire into role.

Position Requirements:
The duties and responsibilities of a Security Officer include, but are not limited to:
Patrols, both on foot and in a security vehicle, to ensure safety and security in or around campus buildings, facilities, and areas adjacent to the school sites.
