Pat and Patsy Hennin founded the Shelter Institute in 1974.
Our work was initially sparked when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and millions of Afghans began to pour into Pakistan as refugees.
They moved to Pakistan with a dedicated team of people in 1982.
By 1990, the work prospered and eventually reached a million dollars in annual project expenditures.
After the July 2017 Two Week Design Build Class, a graduate posted the following on Instagram:
“Gentrification is in motion and not slowing down in the CD. Once the heart of Seattle’s Black community, by 2019 it’s estimated that just 14% of the CD will be Black,” Hawthorne states.
