1963

Morningside was incorporated June 11, 1963.

1964

1964 Four agencies merged to form Morningside – Lower Puget Sound Development Center, ARC (Association of Retarded Children), UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) and the Society of Crippled Children decided that the community would be better served by merging and chose to call this new company Morningside.

1970

In 1970 Morningside broke ground.

1971

In 1971, the William Lintz Sheltered Workshop was renamed the Beaver County Rehabilitation Center.

1975

1975 – First microfilm contract at Airdustrial (New Market Industrial Campus) location.

1980

1980 – First enclave at Charlie’s Bar and Grill prepping food.

1983

Canterbury Enterprises was founded in 1983 by the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater St Louis, Inc. (UCP). At the time, UCP wanted to create an employment program for people with orthopedic disabilities to help them take the first step toward a more self-reliant lifestyle.

1984

1984 – Morningside had over 104 placements in the community.

Starting in 1984, the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities convened statewide and regional conferences to create excitement about supported employment, then sponsored pilot projects to implement supported employment practices. "The Supported Employment Movement">

1989

1989 – first supported employment placement made.

1991

1991 – Call center opened answering phones for the Washington State Department of Tourism and fulfilling orders for “Destination Washington” a catalog of things to do in Washington State.

1992

1992 – Morningside began a nationally recognized High School transition program.

1996

In 1996, CMSE expanded opportunities to its employees by providing on-site employment services.

2000

2000 – Opening of an office in Port Angeles (Clallam County).

2001

As indicated in the graph above from the Government Accountability Office’s 2001 analysis of Section 14(c), the vast majority of certificate holders are sheltered workshops (referred to by GAO as “work centers”), rather than private businesses.

2006

2006 – Morningside found an ideal spot on the main arterial into Olympia, Plum Street for our new corporate center.

2009

2009 – Purchased a new office building in Port Angeles.

2011

Near the end of 2011, two significant developments occurred that elevated both sub-minimum wage and sheltered workshops to the Council’s attention.

2012

NCD allocated funds for the members of the task force to travel to seven states between March and May 2012.

2015

2015 – Morningside eliminated the use of a special federal provision that allowed for individuals to be paid less than minimum wage.

2018

On May 1 2018, CMSE celebrated a new chapter in its almost 50 years of service by opening a Day/Retirement Program called the Next Step Day Program.

2018 – Morningside served 1,063 clients and placed 214 individuals into jobs.
