SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Teacher Aide is responsible for providing care for a group of children as part of a teaching team. They will work with any age group as needed, ranging from infant to Pre-K classrooms.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains a Safe and Healthy Environment
Promote healthy eating practices by eating with children.
Share routine duties with other staff (supervision on playground, toileting, cleanup, classroom maintenance, etc.).
Assist in keeping room and other areas neat and clean.
Interact with children in activities they are supervising.
Perform appropriate hand washing and sanitizing procedures.
Participate in child/teacher‐initiated activities.
Use equipment/materials to promote physical development.
Implement planned activities.
Engage children in learning activities outdoors.
Ensure that materials are prepared in advance of implementing activities.
Ensure that Active Supervision policies are followed at all times to ensure safety of children while under our care.
Supports Social and Emotional Development and Provides Positive Guidance
Facilitate hands‐on activities that develop self‐esteem and social skills as identified on the lesson plan.
Demonstrate awareness of cultural diversity while interacting with children.
Use positive guidance techniques and strategies.
Provide access to a wide variety of creative/expressive activities.
Follow classroom routines and provide smooth transitions.
Encourage children to be independent in decision making and self‐care (dressing, toileting, etc.)
Greet children upon arrival and departure.
Show each child affection and attention daily.
Encourage children to problem solve and discover.
Help children work out problems by encouraging them to talk about their feelings (anger,
sadness, fear, etc.) and express them appropriately.

The Teacher Aide must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

An understanding of the early education and family center cultural environment.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED with 2 or more years of Early Childhood Education experience preferred.

Child Development Associate (CDA)
Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC)
Technical College Diploma (TCD)
Associate degree

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Teacher Aide is expected to:
Lift and carry children and equipment, 30lbs unassisted and 50lbs with assistance.
Capability to sit on the floor and stand up independently to interact with children.
Clean and maintain equipment and the center.
Take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, and staff due to the potential exposure to anyone who may be ill and/or contagious.
Work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment where there may be a number of activities and situations happening at once.
Ability to use arms and legs and moving their whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
Ability to learn/use technology.
Ability to pass a hearing test.
Visually observe children from all areas of the classroom and playground from a distance of at least 20 feet.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Background check, fingerprinting, and drug test are required prior to hire date. Caring for children can be stressful. The Teacher Aide must ensure that children are supervised at all times, and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities. There may be a number of situations happening at once, and the Teacher Aide must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.

A Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting in the assigned teacher in planning and implementing all duties related to the classroom, children and parents as stated in the performance standards and on site program review instrument. A Teacher Assistant must also assist in the day to day management of an assigned classroom, including all assigned paperwork delegated by the Center Coordinator/Lead Teacher and Teacher in the classroom.
Specific Responsibilities:
Conduct daily head count and complete daily attendance records and meal count
Follow an approved curriculum and daily schedule, and assist in development and implementation of daily lesson plans, which reflect activities and experiences to include all the requirements of the Head Start performance standards, i.e., fostering cognitive functioning by sequencing activities from simple to complex and from concrete to abstract. Lesson plans must include developmentally appropriate activities to promote social, intellectual, physical, emotional growth, and activities that allow children to make choices and be creative. Lesson plans must also include appropriate nutrition, mental health, dental health activities as an individual learning unit or as a part of other learning activities and experience. Must be distinct and easily identifiable, balancing teacher directed and child initiated activities which are developmentally and age appropriate
Monitor, document and follow the policy for reporting suspected child abuse
Observe, assess and record the behavior of assigned children. Records must reflect assessment tool(s) used. There must be evidence in each child's folder that his or her program of activities and experiences are planned and based on an on-going assessment. On-going observations, recordings (anecdotal or other) evaluations of each child's growth and development must be contained in each child's folder
There must be an educational and/or developmental goal established for each child. To reach the established goal - this effort must be documented by assisting in timely updating of each assigned child's assessment.
In the absence of the Teacher and in conjunction with Disability Specialist and appropriate professional staff, parents, etc. develop and implement an individualized education plan (IEP) for each child with an identified and confirmed (professionally diagnosed) disability, and an Individualized Prescriptive Plan for “children at risk”
Assist to compile an inventory. Assist to request and store adequate and appropriate classroom materials and Supplies
Assist Teacher with visits to the homes of parents or guardians of children assigned to classroom
Assist Teacher to coordinate the activities of volunteers
Understands, respects and maintains confidential information regarding children, families, and program
Assists in the implementation of the assigned curriculum designed to improve the physical abilities, social/emotional development, and mental skills of children enrolled in the program.
Assist Teacher to demonstrate on a continual basis appropriate classroom management techniques, i.e., establishing and maintaining organization, dealing with disruptions and behavior problems, etc. (The use of corporal punishment and isolation as disciplinary measures is strictly prohibited, and could result in immediate termination.)
On a continual basis, assists Teacher to advise parents of progress and/or problems of each child. Assist in the documentation of all contacts and attempted contacts with parents
Be courteous and receptive to all Head Start parents, encourage participation in their child's developments at every occasion. Reinforce positive behavior shown by parents
Assist the Teacher to supervise the arrival and departure of children and to load/unload buses

Nature and Scope:
Under the direction of the Center Director, and Early Head Start Lead Teacher, the Early Learning Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting in the delivery of a high-quality educational experience for the children and families under his/her care. Must implement the program based on the programs goal and objectives. All decisions must be guided by the YMCA, Bright from the Start licensing, and Quality Rated. Parent involvement is critical to the impact and success of the overall program.
Minimum Requirements:
Must be 21 years of age.
Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
Have at least 2 years of experience working with children younger than five in a state licensed center. NAEYC or Quality Rated experience a plus.
Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
Ongoing Responsibilities:
Ensure School Readiness/Academic Instruction:
Utilize the curriculum goals and objectives to develop lesson plans to support the early learning standards and include educational experiences in Language/Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, Creative (Music, Art and Drama), Social & Emotional, and Physical Development

Create activities that relate to the weekly studies and extend on what they know about each student's interest and their families.
Implement family style meals, sit and eat with children, and engage them in conversation.
Maintain compliance with the Y's Way to the Creative Curriculum goals and objectives.
Arrange the learning environment to support learning content areas and ITERS and ECERS criteria.
Empower Healthy Living/Health & Safety:
Design an environment that protects children's Health and Safety at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that all Physical Hazards are always inaccessible to students.
Create an environment that prevents challenging or disruptive behaviors through - classroom strategies/designs, effective transitions and engaging activities.
Use positive redirection to address inappropriate behaviors. Behavior charts cannot be displayed in Pre-K classrooms. No employee can use any form of corporal punishment as a method of discipline. Any violation will be grounds for automatic termination

Teachers are mandated reporters and are required by law to report the witnessing of inappropriate discipline or knowledge of child abuse

Provides adequate supervision as defined by BFTS, Quality Rated, and the YMCA of children during all activities (indoors & outdoors) as well as during all times when children are under their direct care. Any lack of supervision that results in an injury of a student can be grounds for immediate termination.
Must obtain First Aid/CPR & 10-hour Health & Safety Orientation (BFTS) within 30 days of hire and maintain the certification.
Follows and teaches health practices relating to Hand-washing and Basic Hygiene Practices.
Utilizes developmentally appropriate feeding, toileting, cleaning and health care practices for infant and toddlers.
Complete Incident Reports and to follow the required documentation steps and protocol in reporting the incident to the Directors and families immediately.
Assessments and Evaluations:
Maintain assessment records to meet GOLD guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to, following the schools Assessment Timeline for evaluation of each student development and organization of student portfolios.
Provide updates regarding each student's development during parent/teacher conferences. These conferences must be held at a minimum of two times per school term and any additional conferences, as required. These conferences shall contain positive and developmental information rather than reports of behavior related incidents and child's areas of concerns.
Conduct Brigance screenings for all students within the timelines given.
Family and Volunteer Engagement:
Teachers use a variety of formal and informal strategies to become acquainted with and learn from families about their family culture and structure.
Teachers and families work together to plan activities for student and teachers strongly encourage family involvement during all branch activities and events.
Recruits volunteers and In-kind Contributions to support program goals.
Professional Development:
Teachers evaluate and improve their own performance based on ongoing reflection and feedback from supervisor, peers and families. Teachers develop a staff development plan with their supervision.
Utilize planning time to develop lesson plans and other task to support the overall program goals.
Commit to an agreed upon work schedule and is flexible, if needed to adjust hours with little notice.
Attends Pre-service, In-service and any special training sessions required by the program.
Teachers must to be prepared to meet all Partnership Training Requirements which include Rollins Center, PCA Start for Life.

Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Pre-K Teacher Assistant is responsible for working cooperatively with the Pre-K Lead Teacher in planning and conducting learning experiences and activities and assists in the day-to-day management of an assigned classroom.

A Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting in the assigned teacher in planning and implementing all duties related to the classroom, children and parents as stated in the performance standards and on site program review instrument. Specific Responsibilities:
Conduct daily head count and complete daily attendance records and meal count
Follow an approved curriculum and daily schedule, and assist in development and implementation of daily lesson plans, which reflect activities and experiences to include all the requirements of the Head Start performance standards, i.e., fostering cognitive functioning by sequencing activities from simple to complex and from concrete to abstract. Lesson plans must include developmentally appropriate activities to promote social, intellectual, physical, emotional growth, and activities that allow children to make choices and be creative. Lesson plans must also include appropriate nutrition, mental health, dental health activities as an individual learning unit or as a part of other learning activities and experience. Must be distinct and easily identifiable, balancing teacher directed and child initiated activities which are developmentally and age appropriate
Monitor, document and follow the policy for reporting suspected child abuse
Observe, assess and record the behavior of assigned children. Records must reflect assessment tool(s) used. There must be evidence in each child's folder that his or her program of activities and experiences are planned and based on an on-going assessment. On-going observations, recordings (anecdotal or other) evaluations of each child's growth and development must be contained in each child's folder
There must be an educational and/or developmental goal established for each child. To reach the established goal - this effort must be documented by assisting in timely updating of each assigned child's assessment.
In the absence of the Teacher and in conjunction with Disability Specialist and appropriate professional staff, parents, etc. develop and implement an individualized education plan (IEP) for each child with an identified and confirmed (professionally diagnosed) disability, and an Individualized Prescriptive Plan for “children at risk”
Assist to compile an inventory. Assist to request and store adequate and appropriate classroom materials and Supplies
Assist Teacher with visits to the homes of parents or guardians of children assigned to classroom
Assist Teacher to coordinate the activities of volunteers
Understands, respects and maintains confidential information regarding children, families, and program
Assists in the implementation of the assigned curriculum designed to improve the physical abilities, social/emotional development, and mental skills of children enrolled in the program.
Assist Teacher to demonstrate on a continual basis appropriate classroom management techniques, i.e., establishing and maintaining organization, dealing with disruptions and behavior problems, etc. (The use of corporal punishment and isolation as disciplinary measures is strictly prohibited, and could result in immediate termination.)
On a continual basis, assists Teacher to advise parents of progress and/or problems of each child. Assist in the documentation of all contacts and attempted contacts with parents
Be courteous and receptive to all Head Start parents, encourage participation in their child's developments at every occasion. Reinforce positive behavior shown by parents
Assist the Teacher to supervise the arrival and departure of children and to load/unload buses

Follow an approved curriculum and daily schedule, and assist in development and implementation of daily lesson plans, which reflect activities and experiences to include all the requirements of the Head Start performance standards, i.e., fostering cognitive functioning by sequencing activities from simple to complex and from concrete to abstract. Lesson plans must include developmentally appropriate activities to promote social, intellectual, physical, emotional growth, and activities that allow children to make choices and be creative. Lesson plans must also include appropriate nutrition, mental health, dental health activities as an individual learning unit or as a part of other learning activities and experience. Must be distinct and easily identifiable, balancing teacher directed and child initiated activities which are developmentally and age appropriate
Monitor, document and follow the policy for reporting suspected child abuse
Observe, assess and record the behavior of assigned children. Records must reflect assessment tool(s) used. There must be evidence in each child's folder that his or her program of activities and experiences are planned and based on an on-going assessment. On-going observations, recordings (anecdotal or other) evaluations of each child's growth and development must be contained in each child's folder
There must be an educational and/or developmental goal established for each child. To reach the established goal - this effort must be documented by assisting in timely updating of each assigned child's assessment.
In the absence of the Teacher and in conjunction with Disability Specialist and appropriate professional staff, parents, etc. develop and implement an individualized education plan (IEP) for each child with an identified and confirmed (professionally diagnosed) disability, and an Individualized Prescriptive Plan for “children at risk”
Assist to compile an inventory. Assist to request and store adequate and appropriate classroom materials and Supplies
Assist Teacher with visits to the homes of parents or guardians of children assigned to classroom

Qualifications:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Teacher may be expected to:
Lift and carry children and equipment, 30lbs unassisted and 50lbs with assistance.
Capability to sit on the floor and stand up independently to interact with children.
Clean and maintain equipment and the center.
Take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, and staff due to the potential exposure to anyone who may be ill and/or contagious.
Work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment where there may be a number of activities and situations happening at once.
Ability to use arms and legs and moving their whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
Ability to learn/use technology.
Ability to pass a hearing test.
Visually observe children from all areas of the classroom and playground from a distance of at least 20 feet.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Background check, fingerprinting, and drug test are required prior to hire date. Caring for children can be stressful. The Teacher must ensure that children are supervised at all times, and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities. There may be a number of situations happening at once, and the Teacher must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.

Performance of this job will be evaluated consistent with Sheltering Arms evaluation policy.
