As a result of the union’s hard work and dedication since 1908, SDA members are among the highest paid retail workers in the world today.
In 1911 the Australian Hairdressers, Wigmakers and Hairworkers Employees Federation of Australia was formed.
In 1919 these two unions merged to form the Shop Assistants and Warehouse Employees Federation of Australia.
In 1940 the union bought its first car for organising in country and outer metropolitan areas.
Chadstone was the first suburban shopping centre and it opened in 1960.
In 1960 the Mannequins and Models Guild was formed.
In 1972 the union changed its name to the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association.
In 1978, the union moved into its own premises at 53 Queen Street, Melbourne in a building jointly owned with the Federated Clerks Union.
In 1987, the SDA helped facilitate compulsory employer payments of 3% superannuation for employees paid into industry fund REST Super with joint union-employer directors.
Since 2003 the SDA has been based in its own building at 65 Southbank Boulevard Southbank.
He did not stand for re-election in 2014 and former NSW Branch Secretary Gerard Dwyer was elected National Secretary by the SDA's National Council.
Following the 2017 launch of Amazon in Australia, the SDA and the Transport Workers Union formed the Online Retail & Delivery Workers Alliance.
The SDA has a history of campaigning across the broader union movement. It continues this tradition today through its contribution to the ACTU's Change The Rules campaign focused on reforming Australian industrial relations in the lead up to the 2019 federal election.
