In the 1940's, he introduced a technique developed by the Dutchman Frenkel - in vitro culture – which revolutionized the manufacture of vaccines and led to the production of reagents for in vitro diagnostic testing.
The company was created in 1967 in the United States by Doctor John H. Silliker, a microbiologist known for his work on Salmonella, who began his own business with a staff of just four people.
The Fondation Mérieux was established in 1967 by Docteur Charles Mérieux, in honor of his father, Marcel Mérieux.
In 1994, the family decided to focus on diagnostics and immunotherapy, thus divesting the vaccine business (sold to Rhône Poulenc/Sanofi).
In 1997, a major investment in Silliker Labs gave birth to Mérieux NutriSciences.
Biofortis, a leading clinical research and analytical lab focusing on microbiota analysis in Nantes, France, was acquired in 2009.
In 2010, Mérieux NutriSciences acquired Provident Clinical Research in Addison, Illinois, which was renamed to Biofortis Research.
