By 1846, the area had grown into Utah’s largest rendezvous site, attracting trappers, traders and explorers from all across the West.

1940

On November 27, 1940, the Mayor of Ogden declared the “Ogden Snow Basin winter playground” officially open.

Snow Basin hosted its first ski race in December 1940, attracting 75 racers.

Ever since the first hearty skier schussed down our slopes in 1940, people from all over the United States have come to enjoy our exhilarating powder snow and majestic mountain scenery.

1941

Sverre and Corey Engen opened Snow Basin’s first ski school in 1941.

1944

Snowbasin won the title and the Forest Service constructed a lodge in 1944.

1946

Delayed by World War II, it didn’t add its first legitimate chair lift or hold dedication and naming ceremonies until 1946.

1949

The resort had seen incredible growth since it opened in 1954.

1957

In 1957, Ogden City sold Snowbasin to S.S. Huntington of Colorado, a private developer, who continued its development as a resort.

1959

In 1959, Jaws of Death opened for skiers, the first trail on the North Face.

1960

In 1960 he opened Snow Lake Lodge.

1964

In 1964, Mount Snow took another leap into the future with the ski industry’s first skis-on gondola.

1970

By 1970, Mount Snow had expanded to include nearly 44 trails over three mountain areas.

1971

1979

Snowbasin was significantly improved in 1979 with the construction of the Middle Bowl triple chairlift and a 2,700 square-foot expansion of the day lodge.

1984

The Holding family purchased Snowbasin in 1984 and still own it today.

1985

The Snowbasin Master Development Plan was revised in 1985 to include the development of a destination four-season resort and a land exchange with the Forest Service.

1986

In 1986 Carinthia Ski Area was purchased and combined with Mount Snow.

1989

The environmental impact study of the plan began in 1989 and took nearly two years to complete.

1992

In 1992, Un Blanco Gulch, the first “snowboard park” in the East was established, propelling Mount Snow to the forefront of freestyle terrain progression.

2002

Then in 2002, Kelly Clark, a snowboarder raised on the slopes of Mount Snow, won the first American gold medal of the XIX Olympic Games in women’s half-pipe.

2004

On June 25, 2004 Snowbasin Resort took one more step toward the goal to become a four-season resort when it opened for its inaugural Summer Season.

However, during one of his travels abroad, he suddenly realised the potential of his far far north home area! In 2004 Kaare was in Finland, where they had already built an ice hotel a couple of winters – and then the idea of a snow hotel in Kirkenes was born!

2013

In 2013 the Snowhotel was moved to a new location by the fjord outside the town of Kirkenes, and importantly, with no light pollution from the lights of the town – which enhances the visibility of the Northern Lights.

2016

Another $50 million in base-area improvements will break ground before the 2016-17 season, kicking off a 20-year plan that will completely rebuild Mount Snow’s base area.

2018
