This position is a day position, working Monday - Friday; including all major Holidays off. Job Responsibilities: Assessment: The PAIN RN is required to collect, interpret, record and communicate pertinent data that is relevant to the patient's care in the PAIN unit. Data is concurrently assessed for optimum patient care and planned discharge of the patient. Implementation: The PAIN RN provides direct care to patients, meeting their physiological needs: o Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly. o Provides emotional support and comfort measures. o Gives information or explanation to patients and their families as warranted. o Ensures and respects the patient's rights, privacy and dignity. o Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the postoperative phase. o Maintains the intravenous infusion, may start new IVs as needed, discontinues IVs before discharge, records and delivers amount of solutions as ordered. o Administers medications and oxygen as needed, documents all administration o Recognizes symptoms of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and/or other impending crisis; initiates emergency response. o Considers “Universal Precautions” in the delivery of patient care. o Coordinates the activities of other health care professionals and ancillary staff in assisting the patient for discharge. o Instructs the patient in self-care and in home treatment of postoperative symptoms. o Documents all postoperative care. o Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrences noted during the postoperative phase of recovery. o Surveys patient record and recovery record for CQI as needed. o Assists in properly caring for and disinfecting equipment and furniture in the recovery areas. o Reports equipment malfunction and documents return to service of equipment. o Participates in the evaluation and in-servicing of new supplies and equipment. Evaluation o The PAIN RN continuously evaluates the patient's response to nursing interventions and modifies the nursing care plan to achieve the desired outcome. o Collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient care plan according to the changing needs of the patient. o Professional Characteristics and Evaluation Qualifications: Current state RN licensure. Current BLS, ACLS certification is required. CAPA or CPAN certification is preferred. BSN or Associate Degree in nursing with a minimum of five (5) years clinical experience. Minimum of three (3) years peri-anesthesia experience. Physical Requirements: Hepatitis immunization (Will be provided at no cost to the employee) or documented refusal to be vaccinated. Admit patients to unit after surgery and recovery period complete. Formulate, implement, and carry out plan of care for post-surgical patients while on the patient care unit. Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions. Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity. Monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patients' conditions. Administer medications/treatments as per physician's orders. Assess the needs of individuals, families and/or communities, including assessment of individuals' home and/or work environments to identify potential health or safety problems. Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. Consult with institutions or associations regarding issues and concerns relevant to the practice and profession of nursing. Engage in infection control programs, risk programs, and other hospital related committees: when asked to do so. Instruct individuals, families and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention related to discharge teaching and preparing patients for their transition of care to next level at discharge form hospital. Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records. Prepare rooms, equipment and supplies, and ensure that stock of supplies are maintained. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: The position requires extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping and at times running. Any work load exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance. The individual will be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.
