J.R. Bittle was the first fire chief to be appointed on December 1, 1940, by the Fire Commissioners.
Engine 2 began responding out of the new station in May 1941.
By the end of 1941, the Spokane Valley Fire Protection District No.
Chief Bittle left the department in September 1942, and Bassil George was appointed as the next chief.
8. On August 29, 1947, Spokane County Fire District 8 was established by a resolution adopted by Spokane County Commissioners.
In early 1947, several community-minded citizens came together to discuss the formation of a fire district to serve citizens living south of the City of Spokane and south of the Spokane Valley.
In 1949, Spokane County Fire District 8 purchased its first truck, a 1949 Dodge Power Wagon, and appointed its first Fire Chief, Corwin McClung.
The District’s first official fire station was built at 2914 E. 57th in 1951.
Also in 1951, the commissioners approved the purchase of the old bank in Valleyford to serve as the District’s second fire station, Station 2.
Prior to 1967, a call-taker for the Fire District would answer the fire telephone and then immediately begin contacting volunteer firefighters by telephone.
A new fire station was built in Valleyford on the Palouse Highway in 1980.
As the population grew, the District annexed a portion of the Saltese area and constructed Station 5 on Linke Road in 1990.
In the mid 1990's all fire districts in Spokane County began using a new numbering system in preparation to consolidate dispatch centers.
State Farm Insurance started the program in 1992 and has sponsored 250 dogs in 43 states and Canada.
A new Station 81was constructed in 2002 near 61st and the Palouse Highway to replace the station at 57th and Regal.
In the fall of 2009, the department completed and submitted an application to State Farm for consideration.
Commissioner Burch was appointed to the Board of Fire Commissioners in July 2016 to fill an unexpired term and has served continuously since that time.
Note: As the individual appointed to this non-partisan position, Commissioner Burch was elected by voters in November 2017.
Commissioner Guarisco was appointed to the Board of Fire Commissioners in August 2018 to fill an unexpired term and has served continuously since that time.
Commissioner Mike Kester was elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners in November, 2019.
Note: As the individual appointed to this non-partisan position, Commissioner Guarisco was elected by voters in November 2019.
Commissioner Brian Asmus was appointed to the Spokane Valley Fire Department Board of Fire Commissioners in 2021.
