St. Ann's Center for Children company history timeline

1860

In April 1860, three Daughters of Charity, a Catholic community of women dedicated to helping the poor, embarked on a mission to establish Washington D.C's first foundling home for orphaned, abused and neglected children.

St Ann’s has served the Washington DC area’s most vulnerable children, youth and families since 1860.

1863

On March 3, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress to incorporate St Ann's Infant Asylum, as it was then called.

1925

Opened as an orphanage on Christmas Eve 1925, St Ann’s Home & School has evolved over the years to meet the ever-changing needs of the child welfare system.

1949

In 1949, St Ann's started providing affordable child care for working mothers with young children to further assist the DC community.

1963

Groveton High Class of 1963 — Sept.

1966

In 1966 St Ann’s reorganized as a residential treatment center for children with serious emotional, behavioral and mental health challenges.

1968

Oxon Hill High Class of 1968 — Sept.

1973

Eastern High Class of 1973 — Nov.

1982

In 1982 St Ann’s began to provide for more than 150 residents, in addition to serving more than 140 students in its Education and Day School Programs and over 300 families in the community.

1984

Already operating an affordable child care center for toddlers and preschoolers, St Ann’s expanded the program to care for infants in 1984.

1988

Gaithersburg High Class of 1988 — Oct.

Yorktown High Class of 2003 — Nov.

2008

St Ann Center appeared on the front page of the New York Times on August 19, 2008.

2016

Edna was named 2016 Rotary Person of the Year by the Rotary Club of Milwaukee.

2016 20162016 Real Estate AwardBucyrus Campus was the recipient of a Milwaukee Business Journal 2016 Real Estate Award for “Most Creative Deal” and finalist for the Project of the Year.

2020 2020COVID-19 forces St Ann Center closureSt Ann Center temporarily closes its two campuses for 12 weeks as a precautionary measure prompted by coronavirus, COVID-19 and a Safer at Home Order issued by the State of Wisconsin.
