1821

During 1783-1821, St Augustine was given back to the Spanish under the Treaty of Paris.

During what is called by historians the Second Spanish Period (1784 to 1821), Spain suffered the Napoleonic invasions at home and struggled to retain its colonies in the western hemisphere.

During 1821, when Florida was a territory, the first Sheriff, James R Hanham, was appointed in newly formed St Johns County, and James Pendelton was appointed Sheriff in Escambia County.

1825

In July 1825, he was ordered by Secretary of War James Barbour to allow Sheriff Streeter to hold prisoners there, Marshal Smith apparently ignored Barbour’s orders.

1847

Jose Simeon Sanchez was sheriff from ? until 1847.

1848

Michael Usina, Sheriff – 1848.

1850

The 1850 census shows Raphael Canova, 29, as Sheriff and Tax Collector who owned real estate valued at $300.

1861

Like many of St Johns County’s young men, Gould rallied to the cause of the Confederacy and was mustered into the 3rd Florida Infantry, “St Augustine Blues,” in August 1861.

In 1861, the Civil War began.

1862

St Augustine was thus one of the few places in the United States where Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, issued in 1862, actually freed any slaves.

1886

He owned a railroad company that in 1886 linked St Augustine by rail with the populous cities of the east coast.

1887

In 1887, his company began construction of two large and ornate hotels and a year later added a third that had been planned and begun by another developer.

1919

He died in office on February 7, 1919, at the age of 56.

1933

On May 7, 1933, Deputy Lamar Knight and Deputy Frank Quigley were shot and killed.

1952

In 1952, a new jail was completed, and Sheriff Davis moved his headquarters from the old jail on McWilliams Street to the new jail on Lewis Speedway.

1964

In 1964, St Augustine played a role in America’s civil rights struggle when Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. led a local campaign to dramatize national efforts designed to secure Congressional approval of what became the landmark Civil Rights Act of that year.

1965

The city celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1965 and undertook in cooperation with the State of Florida a program to restore parts of the colonial city.

1970

In 1970, then Governor Claude Kirk removed Sheriff Davis from office based on allegations made by several individuals.

1971

The first of Henry Flagler's three great hotels, the Ponce de Leon, was adapted for use as an institution of higher learning in 1971.

1981

Sheriff Shoar began his law enforcement career as a police officer with the St Augustine Police Department in December 1981.

1991

With vision and forethought, Sheriff Perry diligently and conscientiously led the Sheriff’s Office through a series of improvements to the crowning achievement of attaining nationally accredited status in 1991.

1999

He became the Administrative Services Commander in 1999.

2005

Assumed the duties of Sheriff on January 1, 2005.
