St. John the Baptist Catholic Church company history timeline

1974

In the fall of 1974, Father Metzger began his theological studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

1975

On June 27, 1975, a special mass and ceremony was held in his honor by the parishioners.

Although every avenue was pursued to keep the school open, it sadly closed in 1975.Monsignor Lennon was followed by Father Bergeron who instituted the first Parish Council.

1978

Father Metzger was ordained a priest of the diocese of Columbus on May 27, 1978 and has served on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission and the Marriage Tribunal as a Defender of the Bond.

1980

In 1980, Father Marrapese founded the Italian Festival with three objectives:

1984

After the Notre Dame Sisters departed in 1984, the old convent was converted into a combination rectory and parish office.

1989

Father Marrapese established a $250,000 college endowment fund, built the Italian Cultural Center in October 1989, and stimulated a public awareness of the Italian culture.

1991

In July 1991, Father Marrapese retired and presently resides at the PIME seminary in Newark, Ohio where he continues his missionary work.

A longtime friend of St John’s, he presided at a Holy Hour on September 8, 1991, entrusting the parish to Mary and launching his Rosaries for Russia program.

1992

In 1992 a new rectory was purchased on the property next to the church grounds.

1993

Structurally, the repair of the collapsing roof in 1993 was the first step of a major restoration: a new floor was laid, the church was repainted; heating and air-conditioning repairs made; new lighting installed.

1995

On the Feast of St, John the Baptist, June 24, 1995, Bishop Ahearn celebrated a Solemn Mass to culminate the Restoration Project.

1996

On Sunday, October 6, 1996, The Most Reverend James Griffin, J.D., J.C.L, Bishop of Columbus, was the principal celebrant and homilist for the ten o’clock Centennial Founding Mass.

1998

Fittingly, on June 28, 1998, the parishioners of St John the Baptist Church paid a deserved tribute to their beloved pastor, Monsignor Mario A. Serraglio, at the Berwick party House with over 300 people in attendance.

Upon the appointment of Reverend William A. Metzger as St John the Baptist’s new pastor and spiritual leader on July 14, 1998, a historical first occurred for the church.

Father Carey remained with us until 1998, when Father John Pardue was appointed to Saint John's.

1999

An addition to the facility was completed in 1999 and provided a Eucharistic Adoration chapel, middle school classrooms, meeting rooms, a gathering hall, gift shop, and parish office space.

2000

In the Spring of 2000, a new 10,000 sqft Parish Center was opened to house parish offices and activities.

2002

The 2002 canonization of the Capuchin friar Padre Pio of Pietrelcina would open another ministerial opportunity for the parish.

2008

Rey Bersabal joined us in August 2008 after Fr.

2010

The $7.5 million debt incurred for all these improvements was paid in full by June 2010.

2014

Parishioners, past parishioners and alumni gathered at 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, February 1, 2014 with Bishop Edward Rice, Fr.

2015

In 2015 an archdiocesan reorganization combined St John’s with The Church of the Holy Cross to form The Parish of Holy Cross-Saint John the Baptist.

2017

In late August of 2017 a newly built parish hall and gymnasium was completed and dedicated.
