Steuben County company history timeline

1838

Angola was platted in 1838 and became the county seat.

1865

In 1865 the New York State Legislature required every town and city clerk to prepare a register of soldiers and sailors who had served in the conflict.

1884

Classes began at Tri-State Normal College in 1884.

1898

Doctor Floyd Spaulding started practicing medicine in Cohocton in 1898.

1909

When the land office closed in 1909, the Steuben County Board of Supervisors purchased the land office records—account books, letter books, and hundreds of maps and surveys dating back to 1792.

1917

It was built in 1917 at the former site of the town water pump.

1948

The old records of the local Methodist churches were probably destroyed when the North Cohocton Methodist Church burned down in 1948.

1955

In 1955 Cohocton observed its sesquicentennial—its 150th birthday.

1976

The Steuben County Historical Society published the results of my research on Indian paths back in 1976.
