The KKK was restarted at the Park in 1915 and it continues to be a sacred place for the hate group
In 1915, Helen Plane, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, pushed for the southern face of Stone Mountain to be sculpted as a monument to white Southern heroes.
He was only able to whittle a gigantic silhouette of Lee’s head into Stone Mountain before a money dispute chased him from the project in 1925.
He scraped away Borglum’s Lee and started fresh on the three-horsemen design before funds ran out in 1928.
The Stone Mountain Memorial Association was formed in 1958 as an Act of the Georgia Legislature to purchase the Stone Mountain and surrounding land for a park to serve as a memorial to Southern history and a place of recreation for Georgia’ s citizens and visitors.
The Park is the largest Confederate memorial in the country, though no battles were actually fought here and work on the carving was completed in 1972
A portion of a 2001 state law — passed during the furor that stripped the Georgia flag of its Confederate Stars and Bars — explicitly protects the carving from being “altered, removed, concealed, or obscured in any fashion . . . for all time.”
In 2015, park officials adopted a plan to add a working “freedom bell” above the carving as an homage to the Rev.
On August 15, 2020 the Park closed and the Georgia National Guard had to be deployed to Protect the park from a planned white supremacy rally
