Taos Ski Valley company history timeline

1960

In the 1960’s, they began to develop the lower village, by selling and leasing lots for homes in the core commercial area.

1963

Ernie and Rhoda Blake lived in an eleven foot camper as there were no buildings in the area except an almost-completed Hondo Lodge (now the Snakedance Hotel). Even after they moved into the lodge, they lived without power until 1963.

1970

In the early 1970’s this group purchased water rights downstream and transferred them for consumption in the Ski Valley and worked with the Ski Valley Corporation (TSV) to develop Kachina Village.

1971

In 1971, a Comprehensive Plan for the Twining – Amizette area, prepared by The Architects, Taos, was presented to the Taos County Commission.

1989

Almost 30 years ago to the week, in January of 1989, a massive avalanche crashed down the face of Kachina in the same area.

The Blakes — Ernie died in 1989, but the resort remains a family business — have a strange sense of humor.

1996

Finally, the Village was incorporated into a municipality during 1996, pushing it forward as one of the premier multi-season resort destinations in New Mexico and North America.

2008

On March 19th, 2008, Taos Ski Valley opened its doors to snowboarding for the first time in its history.

2013

In December 2013 it was announced that the Blake’s were selling their ski resort to Louis Bacon.

2014

Improvements include a Lift to Kachina Peak, which was completed in the summer of 2014.

New ownership in 2014 has lead to a revitalization of the resort, infusing it with new energy and capital investments.

2015

Rhoda Blake, 97, who helped her husband Ernie Blake to found Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico, died November 3, 2015, after a brief illness.

Taos has set a starting wage at more than 30 percent above the state minimum wage of $7.50 an hour, and the ski valley’s charitable arm has donated an average of a quarter-million dollars a year in cash, goods and services to local causes since 2015, resort officials said.

Resort officials had no comment as to whether the men who died hiked to their starting point or rode the lift. It opened in 2015, signaling the new owner’s commitment to adventure skiing and to the memory of Mr.
