1804

In the United States, all the states north of Maryland abolished slavery between 1777 and 1804.

1809

Six years later he launched his own firm in Portland, Maine, and then in 1809 moved the business to Montreal.

1826

In 1826, the brothers began to import silk from Asia, and they earned a sizable fortune.

But in 1826 he started a new company in New York City.

1827

Slavery would not be abolished in New York State until 1827.

In 1827, they began to publish the New York Journal of Commerce, a business newspaper.

Conservative in his moral outlook, he founded the New York Journal of Commerce in 1827 to provide a newspaper free of “immoral advertisements.” He also backed movements for temperance and stricter observance of the Sabbath and against the use of tobacco.

In 1827 Lewis joined Arthur in New York.

1828

His return to Calvinism in 1828 created a sensation in Boston and beyond.

1833

In 1833, the brothers and abolitionist Theodore Dwight Weld came together to form the American Anti-Slavery Society.

1835

The present church was built in 1835, on the site of an earlier church built in 1694.

1837

In the Panic of 1837, the brothers lost practically everything, but they recovered and rebuilt their businesses.

The economic crisis of 1837 ruined Arthur, and despite Lewis's loyalty and cooperation, he never regained his status as businessman or reformer.

1838

They were triumphant when slavery was abolished in the British West Indies by 1838 and in French possessions 10 years later.

1840

William Lloyd Garrison dominated the American Anti-Slavery Society, although Arthur Tappan served as president of the organization from its founding until 1840.

1841

In 1841 he founded the successful Mercantile Agency, the first commercial credit institution; it later become Dun and Bradstreet.

1843

In 1843 he visited England in a remarkable effort to persuade the British government to end slavery in Texas through a loan to the young republic.

1846

In 1846 Lewis helped found the American Missionary Association, in opposition to groups more conservative on the slavery issue.

1852

The next year he helped found the National Era, which in 1852 published Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

From the day it opened in December 1955, the Tappan Zee Bridge powered significant economic currents on both sides of the river.

1960

By the end of 1960, all 559 miles of the Thruway system were open, connecting Buffalo on the shores of Lake Erie, the state capital of Albany, and New York City.

Despite its growth since George Washington used it as his Revolutionary War headquarters, in the late 18th century, he could still recognize Tappan's center, where 1960's split level homes are interspersed with historic landmarks on tree-lined, well-maintained streets.

1965

Since December 1965, when the Town of Orangetown, which includes Tappan, declared the 85-acre center of Tappan a New York State historic district, nearly all new construction there stopped.

By 1965, Rockland was averaging more than 3,000 new residential units per year , along with new post offices and other public services, including schools.

1966

The district was created in 1966 by an Orangetown ordinance, the first of its kind for a town in New York State.

1969

Bertram Wyatt-Brown, Lewis Tappan and the Evangelical War against Slavery (1969), delineates Lewis's major significance in social and reform affairs of his era. □

1984

A town law passed in 1984 allows residents who have been living in their own single-family houses for up to five years to create accessory apartments.

1986

Neither has had a resale since 1986.

The artist in residency program was founded in 2016 and offers Tappan artists the opportunity to apply for one- to three-month terms at Tappan Studios.

2021

To further enhance Southwire’s ever growing product line of electrical solutions, Topaz Lighting Corporation (Topaz) was acquired on December 6, 2021.
