Technical College of the Lowcountry company history timeline

1868

TCL traces its roots to the private Mather School, established in 1868 by Rachel Crane Mather to provide education for children of newly freed slaves in Beaufort County, South Carolina.

1962

4, 1962, the result of a last-ditch effort by Charleston County school board officials to stave off integration by providing better facilities for African-American students.

1967

In 1967, the trustees of the school voted to transfer operations of the school to the State of South Carolina, which had been aggressively building up a statewide technical college system.

1988

TCL achieved its current name in 1988 to better reflect the four-county area to which the institution had grown to serve.

The former C.A. Brown High School was named one of five sites to receive a Civil Rights Historic Marker by The Preservation Society of Charleston in 2012.
