Arc of Burlington company history timeline

1963

Kellogg and others had earlier bought the former Wagner Brothers machine shop on Pine Street, which had been occupied by the Burlington Motor Truck Co., and converted the building into an ice cream plant shown in the accompanying photo from the 1963 centennial edition of the Standard Press.

1966

After 5 years in other downtown locations, Mac moved his wagon to the southeast corner of Chestnut and Pine Streets, where he stayed in business until 1966.

1967

The area where the kindergarten building stood is now occupied by the Cooper School building constructed in 1967-68.

1970

In the late 1970’s the Department of Human Services’ Division of Developmental Disabilities needed to find placements for people with more severe and profound disabilities who lived in the community, as well as from the residential institutions in the state of New Jersey.

1971

In 1971 Jim Chirafisi opened Viking Guns in the building.

1972

Tim Wallace bought the building in 1972 and, with Jim Warras, opened Sports Specialties Co.

1974

In 1974 The Arc of Camden County opened the Occupational Training on the White Horse Pike as a vocational rehabilitation facility with funding from the Department of Labor’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

1976

Charles and Dolores Giammo bought the restaurant in July 1976.

1979

In answer to that need, The Arc opened the doors to the Adult Training Services Department in 1979 with the Berlin Adult Training Center.

The Reineman Hardware store was in the building until 1979, when the business moved to Milwaukee Avenue.

1983

The Lois Tire Co. remained in the Beller building until 1983, when it moved to its present quarters on Milwaukee Avenue.

1986

With day and employment services established for nearly 300 people in their communities, The Arc turned, in 1986, to Residential Services in the form of the Supported Living Program.

1992

The photo, taken in 1992 as part of the former Main Street project, is now in the Burlington Historical Society’s collection.

1995

In 1995 Clinton bought Roberts Bros.

1998

They formed the Burlington County Unit for Retarded Children, which later became The Burlington County Unit of the New Jersey Association for Retarded Citizens, and, in 1998, officially, The Arc of Burlington County.

2003

By 2003 The Arc was serving 59 people in homes located throughout Camden County.

2004

Today, Oldenburg Insurance occupies the building, having expanded into the space in 2004.

2005

An arson fire in April 2005 destroyed the former Clinton building.

2016

The Arc of Camden County began its 70th year of providing services to people with disabilities and their families, in 2016.
