the New Village School company history timeline

2008

Our first walk-a-thon happened in 2008 when 3rd-4th grade teacher, Sally Grimsrud, and a friend proposed to raise money to purchase water filters for hundreds of villages in rural Kenya.

In 2008, The Village School opened its high school program, with more than 50 founding 9th graders.

2009

Previous to 2009, our upper grades in form and function were virtually indistinguishable from the lower grades.

2010

The choir program was taught by several teachers, but the longest serving teacher, Jennifer Sellers, began in 2010 and has served ever since.

2011

Founding staff and parents worked towards this goal for many years before the opportunity to build its own nutrition services program opened up in the fall of 2011 when the school district stopped providing meals to local charter schools.

2013

The acquisition of a classroom dedicated to Title services in 2013 has allowed for an excellent learning environment for students.

2014

Shannon and Anil presented about Our Whole Lives at the ORATE (Oregon Association of Teacher Educators) conference held at Western Oregon University (WOU) in 2014.

During that period in its history, the school began to study STEAM education practices and in 2014 certified the entire staff in that philosophy of curriculum development.

2016

In 2016, the first group of students to have taken Our Whole Lives from first grade to eighth grade graduated from The Village School.

2017

A capital campaign followed, and the new division opened in August, 2017 with 17 students.

2020

In June 2020, the school celebrated its first ever graduating class of seniors with a class of twelve students.

2021

In February 2021, the school announced a $3.2-million renovation and expansion of its academic, arts and athletic facilities to accommodate current and future growth.
