Town Of Bluffton company history timeline

1800

Historic Old Town Bluffton emerged in the early 1800’s in small dwellings atop high river bluffs overlooking the May River.

1830

The layout of the town's streets in 1830 indicate that it started as a summer haven, and soon developed into a commercial center for isolated plantations in the vicinity that received their goods from Savannah via the May River.

1840

Two notable structures reflecting the history and architecture of the time are The Heyward House, circa 1840, and The Church of the Cross.

Built as a summer home for a local plantation owner, the structure was constructed in 1840 and is one of only eight antebellum homes remaining in Old Town Bluffton.

1844

Literally a hotbed for political rhetoric, in 1844 some of the first cries of secession were first given voice and debate in Bluffton.

1852

Business brought year-round residents and the town was incorporated in 1852.

1860

South Carolina was the first of the states to secede in December 1860.

The 1860 Street Luke’s Parish census lists Baynard as being the owner of forty-four slaves.

1870

Additional information in the 1870 census of St Luke’s Parish indicates that Garvin had a forty-year-old wife named Ellie and one twelve-year-old son named Isaac.

1878

A deed of conveyance dated November 12, 1878, indicates that Garvin may have also been known by the surname Garvey.

1880

The 1880 census of St Luke’s Parish states that Garvin, then 60 years-old, resided with his wife Ellen, 50; son Isaac, 21; daughter-in-law Jenny, 22; and seven-month-old grandson Paul.

1885

Another document shows Garvin selling land to J.H. Estill in 1885.

1891

Following the death of Cyrus around 1891, the title of the property was passed from Cyrus to Isaac Garvin.

1898

From the Civil War and burning of Bluffton to the hurricane of 1898 and up to growth of present-day Bluffton, the church has not only sheltered its own burgeoning congregation, but also remained a devoted and much-loved community institution.

1903

The Bluffton Police Department was established in 1903; 50 years after the Town was incorporated.

1913

A 1913 survey map of Bluffton shows the Garvin homestead at its present location.

1914

Historic records show that the title of the property was passed to Paul Garvin in 1914.

1930

Around 1930, Paul Garvin constructed a second house on the property.

1960

The house was sold by the Garvin family in 1960.

1974

By 1974, off-island development began with Moss Creek.

1975

As one of Bluffton’s oldest surviving buildings, and listed with The National Register of Historic Places since 1975, The Church of the Cross overlooks the May River at 60 Calhoun Street.

2014

For the last decade of her life Jenny Garvin was blind (Brown 10.30.14 and Martin September 8, 2014).
