Town of North Manchester company history timeline

1852

The Harter brothers only operated the mill a short time and sold it to Peter King, February 12, 1852.

1859

James was born in 1859 in Allen County and spent his boyhood years there.

1872

King only owned the mill two years and then sold it to Isaac Thorn who operated it until 1872.

1884

Isaac Shock and Charles M. Rudy had an interest in the mill for several years and they sold to Samuel Hamilton in 1884.

1895

Morris Illinois, graduated from Indiana state normal in 1895, later attended Indiana university and spent about two years at Manchester college.

1901

In April, 1901, the company purchased the Hardwood Lumber Company in Wabash.

1905

1920

In 1920, a stock company was organized and incorporated.

1934

A bequest from Simon Peabody, the brother of James, made an addition possible in 1934 which doubled the size and included an infirmary and a hospital.

1937

Commissioned by Thomas Peabody and designed by well-known architect Charles R. Weatherhogg, the Tower has served as a significant local landmark since 1937.

1938

The North House, a mirror image of the first building, was completed in 1938 to provide room for the increasing number of

1972

The first van, purchased in 1972, increased capacity for transportation to stores, medical appointments and other trips.

1986

EDITOR’S NOTE: In anticipation of North Manchester’s Sesquicentennial Celebration during 1986, the News-Journal, in cooperation with the North Manchester Historical Society, is presenting vignettes from the community’s past.

1987

In 1987, a central nurses station was built in the Health Center by Don and Billie Grubb Strauss as a memorial to their parents.

1994

In 1994, the last of 35 units was filled with new residents of the Village of Peabody.

1995

The Eden Way of Peabody is an alternative care concept implemented in December, 1995.

2009
