Town of Portland company history timeline

1841

Originally named East Middletown or Conway, then Chatham, it was incorporated as a town in 1841.

1850

Settling the land With the help of the Oregon Donation Land Claim of 1850, speculators and pioneers began to settle in Oregon.

1851

When Portland was incorporated in January 1851, the city measured 2.1 square miles.

1873

In 1873 Portland suffered a severe fire that destroyed many buildings but the town soon recovered and it continued to grow.

1875

Pioneer Court House was built in 1875.

1883

The Old Church was built in 1883.

1887

The same year, in 1887 Portland Zoo was founded.

1888

Meanwhile, the Skidmore Fountain was built in 1888.

1892

Portland Art Museum was founded in 1892.

1908

Meanwhile, Reed College was established in 1908.

1909

Sentinel Hotel was built in 1909.

1912

Jackson Tower was built in 1912.

1931

St Johns Bridge was built in 1931.

1936

In 1936, the river flooded into the quarry sites, effectively ending the brownstone industry.

1946

Meanwhile, Portland Children’s Museum was founded in 1946.

1978

Tom McCall Waterfront Park opened in 1978.

1979

With the establishment of the urban growth boundary (UGB) in 1979, along with Oregon’s proactive land use policies, Portland acquired a reputation as a well-planned city.

1997

Mark O. Hatfield Courthouse was built in 1997.

2000

Lan Su Chinese Garden opened in 2000.
