Town of Topsham company history timeline

1803

The first known library, "The Social Library of Topsham," was founded in 1803.

1840

Another Christian-based sect got its start in the 1840’s in Topsham.

1842

In 1756 a toll bridge was constructed by the "Proprietors of the Androscoggin Bridge." It was destroyed by fire in 1842.

1847

Another Christian-based sect got its start in the 1840’s in Topsham. It was here, in 1847, that she had the “vision” which confirmed her beliefs and established her as one of the founding members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

1853

By 1853, the central village had grown to more than 150 buildings, and Federal style gave way to Greek Revival.

1856

The Sagadahoc Agricultural Society laid out its grounds and erected its hail here in 1856; since which other buildings and an elegant judge’s stand have been erected.

1864

The Topsham Fair grandstand was built in 1864 and is still standing; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

1931

The Topsham Public Library opened its doors on February 7, 1931, with 1500 books on its shelves, on the first floor of the old Androscoggin Engine House on 38 Main Street.

1932

July 14, 1932, the old bridge was closed and torn down as the new bridge opened to the public.

2004

In May of 2004, after a very successful capital campaign, the approval of a bond by town voters, and tremendous effort on the part of the board, staff, and community, Topsham Public Library moved into its first permanent home.

2014

In June, 2014, the library celebrated its 10th year at the Foreside Road location with an old-fashioned ice cream social.

2019

In June, 2019, the library celebrated it’s 15th year at the location with an anniversary party.
