The Laboratory Assistant receives and distributes specimens to the appropriate laboratory section. Processes and prepares specimens for testing and send out. Produces reports for faxing or delivery as needed and communicates appropriate information to the health care team. Ensure accurate registration and placement of test orders with all information required. Responsibilities Establishes, maintains and improves strong positive relationships with the medical staff, the public, other Mount Carmel Health departments and own department staff. Accurately receives specimens sent/brought to the laboratory, processing the min the most appropriate manner for the department or shift assigned. Collects specimens utilizing professional and accepted practices; labels specimens accurately. Prepares all specimens for send out to Reference Laboratories. Requirements/Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Basic computer skills required. Working knowledge of medical terminology is desirable. Previous experience in health related field preferred. Effective Communication Skills Detail oriented; able to work with minimal supervision. May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting. Receives, processes, and transports patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting sample types. Loads preanalytical instruments or delivers specimens to the testing department. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. May perform blood and/or blood component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System. Other duties as assigned.
