Turning Point Inc. and Affiliates company history timeline

1971

Since our initial beginning on May 21, 1971 in Newburyport, MA, Turning Point, Inc. provided services for disadvantaged youth, individuals with substance abuse, families in crisis and developmentally disabled individuals.

1975

Before 1975, New Jersey residents who could not afford private residential treatment for alcoholism had to travel to Graymoor in upstate New York for help.

1981

Turning Point was incorporated in May, 1981.

1984

James “Doc” Wheeler is names Executive Director of Turning Point and holds the position until his passing on 1984

1986

In 1986, advocates formed the Alternatives to Abuse Program now called Partner Abuse Intervention Program.

1988

Our first residential group home opened in 1988.

1989

Child services and childcare began in 1989, relieving another barrier preventing women from seeking help.

1991

Anderson House was first incorporated in 1991, and came to fruition due to the efforts of many local residents including Nancy and Stanley Baron, who donated the house that Anderson House still calls home to this day.

1996

The program included a 54-bed, short-term residential treatment for men (32) and women (22). When the project ended in 1996, DAS continued to fund short-term residential treatment for adult men and women.

2007

A secure emergency shelter opened in January of 2007.

2016

John served as Chief Executive Officer until his passing in 2016, at which time Robert Detore was named Chief Executive Officer.

2017

In May 2017, the Shelter was closed due to a decrease in funding making it financially impossible to sustain.
