Since 1967, members of Twin Oaks Community have been living and working together in rural Virginia.
In 1974 East Wind’s first industry began – crafting handmade rope hammocks.
In 1975 East Wind’s largest dormitory, Fanshen, was built with twenty one rooms.
Work began on a new kitchen, dining hall, and lounge area and by 1976 Rockbottom (RB) was completed.
In 1976 a 3500 square foot industrial building was built to support an expanding business.
As membership continued to grow, work began on a third residential building, Annares – by 1978 one dozen bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom were completed.
Our resources were used in 1980 to finance our own totally new venture: East Wind Nut Butters.

Keenan Dakota, who came to Twin Oaks in 1983 two classes shy of college graduation, raised two sons here.
The last dorm to be built, Lilliput, was dedicated as the children’s building in 1992 and currently houses many young families.
Alexis Ziegler, 48, created other communities after his 1994 departure and takes me on a walking tour of his latest venture.
Since that contract ended in 2004, Twin Oaks Tofu has taken up much of the slack.
