  • Postdoctoral Researcher - Trait-Based Ecology of Macroalgae, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA

University of California, Santa Barbara 4.6company rating

Scientist job at University of California

The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Marine Science Institute (MSI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research position focused on the trait based ecology of marine macroalgae. Community ecology is often mired in case histories explaining distribution and abundance of select species. Marine ecosystems are diverse and critical for society and we need a more holistic understanding of the forces driving them if we are to predict change due to climate and human impacts. In temperate marine ecosystems, macroalgae are a vital base of food webs and provide habitat for rich communities but we lack a framework for understanding their ecology beyond decades-old gross morphological generalizations. Trait-based modeling is a promising approach to deal with this complexity and define relationships between quantifiable traits and the distribution and abundance of species. We are combining field and laboratory measurements with modeling to test the broad hypothesis that the depth distribution of common macroalgal species in southern California is predictable based on measured functional traits. The successful candidate will contribute to this work and will have considerable freedom to pursue creative interests related to the project. Responsibilities: * Conduct research contributing to a trait-based framework for understanding the distribution and abundance of marine macroalgae. * Combine basic field and laboratory research to measure macroagal traits with rigorous trait-based modeling and quantitative field surveys to validate models. * Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national or international conferences. Salary and Benefits: This appointment includes a competitive benefits package with medical, dental and vision insurance and a UC retirement plan. Salary is commensurate with the applicant's qualifications and experience.

  • Research Scientist in CRISPR Genomics, Engreitz Lab (2 Year Fixed Term)

    Stanford University 4.5company rating

    Stanford, CA jobs

**School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States** Research Post Date Sep 24, 2025 Requisition # 107333 The Laboratory of Jesse Engreitz (Dept of Genetics, BASE Initiative) is seeking a Research Scientist in CRISPR Genomics (Life Science Research Professional 3) to lead large-scale data production projects to understand the genetic basis of heart diseases. The Engreitz Laboatory is located in the Biomedical Innovations Building on the main campus at Stanford University and is a member of the BASE Initiative in the Betty Irene Moore Children's Heart Center. Project overview: DNA regulatory elements in the human genome, which harbor thousands of genetic risk variants for common and rare heart diseases and could reveal targets for therapeutics that aim to precisely tune cellular functions - if only we could map the complex regulatory wiring that connects 2 million regulatory elements with 21,000 genes, and genes with thousands of pathways across the diverse cell types in the human body. We have recently developed new approaches that could enable mapping this regulatory wiring at massive scale (see Fulco et al. Science 2016, Fulco et al. Nat Genet 2019, Nasser et al. Nature 2021, Gschwind et al. bio Rxiv 2023), and applied these and other approaches to understand the genetic basis of complex diseases (e.g., Schnitzler et al. Nature 2024). We aim to expand these studies to systematically map the functions of variants, enhancers, and genes in many cell types from the heart and vasculature. These studies will ultimately help to uncover biological mechanisms of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, and other heart diseases to help to guide diagnosis and therapeutic development. For information and recent work, see***************************************************************** We are looking for a creative and passionate Research Scientist (PhD-level) to lead the next phase of our efforts to systematically perturb the genome to understand genome function and phenotype.
