Dental Hygienist - Casual Day Shift. This position offers at least 1 day a week, with the flexibility to cover other days. Purpose: Under general supervision, according to the established policies and procedures in accordance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Dental Law, performs paraprofessional duties necessary to preserve dental health and prevent the spread of dental disease.
Responsibilities:
* Give and receive accurate and complete information to parents and doctors while displaying professionalism and perform accurate and thorough charting of patient data.
* Instruct the patient and parent on the proper oral hygiene.
* Take and develop radiographs of a consistent, good diagnostic quality for review by a dentist.
* Perform all necessary housekeeping procedures, including keeping all work areas properly stocked. Manage spills and patient accidents.
* Place topical anesthetics, rubber dam; placement of occlusal sealants using four-handed dental assisting techniques if assisting is necessary.
* Teach hygiene students from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine.
* Page, greet, and seat the patient. Scale and polish primary and permanent dentition and apply topical fluoride. Prepare electronic documents, including discharge summary and school/work excuse.
* Maintain equipment and supplies as directed by the clinic coordinator.
Qualifications:
* High School Diploma or GED required.
* Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program.
* Dental hygiene experience preferred.
* Technical skills to perform scaling, polishing, chairside assistance, and all dental hygiene duties.
* Ability to interact with doctors, patients, families, and students to obtain and relay information on hygiene status, as well as instruct dental students.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Organizational Function and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for instruction in the Dental Hygienist program at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels. POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Dental Hygienist 2 supports advanced dental care and research initiatives by assisting dentists and contributing to oral health studies, by performing dental screening examinations of adults to identify and record baseline and follow-up caries assessments for an oral health grant. The objective of the grant is to evaluate if two treatments for cavities are equally effective in a community setting for adults 62 and older, residing in independent-living apartments. Under supervision of the study dentists, the hygienist will also deliver the treatment interventions to those with cavities. The dental hygienist will also assist the research team with other aspects of the study. This is a Part-Time Position (18.75 hours/week).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Screen patients and review dental records for clinical and research purposes. Perform dental screening examinations of adults at senior independent housing facilities to identify and record baseline and follow-up caries assessments using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) system. (53%)
* Travel to community sites or partner clinics to provide services and collect data. Travel to independent living apartments and deliver the treatment interventions to those with cavities, under the direction of the study dentists, based on the intervention arm of the housing facility. (24%)
* Assist with study visits by preparing materials to be taken to the housing sites for dental exams, recommend oral hygiene methods and contribute to educational materials. The hygienist will operate and maintain dental equipment and ensure compliance with safety standards, and on exam days, assist with setting up, breaking down and cleaning the portable dental equipment following the completion of exams. * Report to the research office at Case Western Reserve University on days when there are no exams to assist with other research activities, including data management. Acts as co therapist with the Dentist in providing and reviewing diagnostic aids, study models, radiographs and charting of hard and soft tissues. Obtains alginate impressions for the fabrication of custom fluoride trays and study models. Removes sutures. Places and removes temporary restorations and periodontal dressings. Exposes and processes radiographs. Administers fluoride therapy. Collects saliva samples and measures salivary flow rates.
4. Acts as co therapist with the General Practice Residents and private dentists in periodontal treatment planning and establishes a preventive maintenance program.
5. Participates in the yearly hygiene orientation to new dental Residents and acts as a resource person to the General Practice Residents in regard to preventive oral health care. 9. Completes clinic record review forms and audits such as operating room sterility audit and Faculty Practice chart review. Completes patient encounter forms for billing of services rendered, requisitions for laboratory tests and prepares prescription forms for medications or fluoride therapy and obtains Dentist's signature.
10. Cleans and disinfects operatory after each procedure. Disinfects, bags and seals ultrasonic instruments. Disposes of hazardous waste and toxic chemicals according to hospital policy. Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
This position assists the Lead Dental Assistant 2 in the coordination of all operational aspects in the department of Endodontics.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Provides chair-side dental assistance for Faculty and Residents, reviewing patient schedules to ensure efficient use of staff time. Assists doctors with communication between patients and parents regarding appointments, oral hygiene, and treatment processes. Maintains treatment charts for patients undergoing active Endodontic treatment and assists with taking digital x-rays as needed. (75%)
* Assists the Lead Dental Assistant 2 with sterilization by collecting contaminated instruments from cubicles, wrapping departmental and resident items, and submitting them for autoclaving in central sterilization. Maintains clinical areas in accordance with OSHA regulations and ensures cleanliness within clinical and laboratory spaces, including cleaning between patients. (7%)
* Prepares clinic supplies for the daily schedule, turns off equipment, and secures the area at the end of the clinic day. Checks equipment to ensure it is in good working order, reports and records repair needs, and contacts appropriate service vendors or Dental School staff for resolution. (7%)
* Prepares supply orders in the absence of Lead Dental Assistant 2 and obtains approval signatures per purchasing guidelines. Assists the Dental Assistant 2 with organizing, maintaining, and ordering departmental instruments and supplies. Supports the Sophomore Class REHE 264/274 in the SIM Clinic by preparing and distributing Endo packets, materials, and supplies. Assists with Dental Mock and National Boards by preparing necessary Endo materials and supplies. Working in AxiUm and ERP SmartCart Window Shopper software systems is mandatory, as these platforms are used for managing patient records, and ordering supplies. Training will be provided to ensure proficiency in both systems. (10%)

WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to work evenings and weekends during Board exams. Must be able to lift 45 lbs. of material and supplies as needed. This work is performed in a clinical setting and requires general knowledge of chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and lab safety. Daily exposure to biohazards, sharps, hot sterilization equipment. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including lab coat, gloves and googles, may be required and provided to limit exposure to hazards. Potential safety hazards exist if explosive agents are used or where oxygen is used under unsafe conditions. Unusual stress may exist when general anesthesia is administered or when emergency situations arise with patients.
