They play a key role in keeping critical systems running the way they should, responding to issues as they come up, and supporting the broader operations team across a large and varied portfolio. Depending on experience, work may be completed independently or alongside journey-level mechanics, with plenty of opportunities to grow technical depth over time. The role supports preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, small repairs, and general building upkeep across residential spaces, student program areas, and support facilities. Technicians also gain hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building systems while developing stronger diagnostic and problem-solving skills through mentoring and day-to-day work in the field. Key Responsibilities * Support zone mechanics and skilled trades staff with system maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and routine building care. * Perform skilled tasks in one or more trades and semi-skilled support tasks in others, using proper tools, diagnostic equipment, and work practices. * Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and equipment documentation. * Identify materials and equipment needed for jobs and help initiate purchase orders. * Maintain accurate work records including time tickets, job requests, and AIM work orders. * Follow OSHA and University safety requirements and use PPE as directed. * Provide updates to building occupants and respond to customer questions in coordination with the supervisor. * Perform other duties as needed to support Zone operations. Qualifications: * Education: HS diploma or equivalent * Experience: A minimum of four [4] years of work experience in at least one building trade. Experience in residential, commercial, higher-education, or similar environments is preferred. * Licensure: Valid Driver's License with a zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving history. Compensation: Anticipated Hiring Range: $19.50 - $23.00 ($40,560 - $47,840 per year). This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Sports Turf Technician to provide turf and grounds maintenance services for the Department of Athletics in an effort to achieve operational excellence. Primary Responsibilities are maintaining the Softball and Track Facilities. Additional responsibilities include: * Exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies * performing repair. * Maintenance and upkeep duties on grounds at various facilities that are utilized by the Athletics Department, student-athletes, sports fans and general public. * Performing mechanical repairs. * Assisting in the preparation, maintenance, and clean-up of outdoor athletic facilities for games, special events, and day-to-day operations. * Assists, as needed, in set-up and teardown for sports related and various events. * Assisting to ensure the proper care, use and maintenance of equipment, tools and supplies; and ensuring tasks are performed in a safe manner. Knowledge and Skills: * Experience in general grounds keeping and landscaping preferred. * Ability to be extremely flexible in terms of work schedule (evenings, weekends, and overtime) required. * Knowledge of the EPA guidelines for the application and storage of fertilizers and pest control chemicals preferred. * Ability to work independently and as part of a team. * Ability to comply with EPA and University guidelines for the application of fertilizers and pest control chemicals. * Ability to assist in the care, usage and maintenance of small & tractor engines, power equipment and tools. * Ability to assist daily in preparation, clean-up, and on site needs associated with the use of athletic facilities. * Ability to ensure the safe use of grounds maintenance equipment. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or equivalent Experience: Two years of experience Licensure: Valid driver's license. Driving forklift or other power industrial trucks requires CDL and may be required within 12-months of hire.
