Who we're looking for: The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician Lead with the Genetics & Solid Tumors Team at the University of Washington Medical Center - Montlake.
This role serves as a key operational and leadership partner within the Genetics Preanalytic service, ensuring high-quality specimen processing and seamless coordination between pathology, molecular genetics, and laboratory teams. The position combines hands-on clinical laboratory expertise with oversight of training, workflow management, quality improvement, and compliance with regulatory standards. Acting as a liaison across divisions, this role proactively resolves specimen issues, supports staff development, maintains documentation and inventory, and drives continuous process improvement ensuring accurate, timely genetic testing while maintaining smooth laboratory operations and patient safety.

What you'll contribute:
* Supports the Genetics Preanalytical Service team, including pulling information from pathology reports and requesting blocks needed for testing, ordering cuts for single blocks, and answering or triaging lower complexity inquiries, etc.
* Solves specimen problems in a timely, thorough and accurate manner, providing appropriate documentation for supervisor review. Makes constructive suggestions for improvements in the laboratory and staffing distribution. Keeps laboratory staff informed regarding specimen and/or handling problems or procedural changes.
* Oversees training of new staff to ensure that training is completed and documented on a timely basis. Work with the supervisor to annually perform, assess and document competency evaluations of current employees, Maintains confidentiality regarding concerning staff and personnel issues. Provide mentorship to current staff and communication about opportunities for continuing education to all staff.
* Act as a liaison between laboratories by ordering FFPE tissue cuts in EPIC Beaker, and troubleshooting with Molecular Genetics Director if tissue is scant or exhausted.
* Ensure that staff follow established departmental policies and division specific processes and guidelines at all times. Integrates new or revised processes into the workplace. Perform biennial review of current documentation per CAP requirements.
* Helps to maintain, archive and retrieve records or materials. Reports equipment and/or facility problems in a timely manner and provides adequate notice to staff. Maintains and/or notifies appropriate person of supply inventory needs.
* Under the direction of manager and/or supervisor, may serve in several specialized roles. These include serving as a representative on committees to implement new systems or processes, as division's envoy for specialized department or hospital related initiatives, and/or work on other projects as assigned by manager or supervisor.
* Ability to perform all Clinical Laboratory Technician tasks. Must be able to perform tasks on all benches in processing areas to oversee and fill in on all bench whenever needed during short staffing periods. Perform other duties as required or as assigned by manager or director.
* Plans, organized and assigns staff work assignments and breaks in a manner that maintains smooth workflow regardless of workload. Communicates with supervisor concerning laboratory's operational status, training needs, personnel issues, and staff concerns. Works with supervisor to review workplace procedures and policies. Reports issues or concerns from other laboratory division or hospital staff through HC1 or other reporting mechanism i.e., Quality Improvement tracking mechanism, incident reports, or Patient Safety Network.
* Applies principles and techniques related to surgical pathology and histopathology within the scope of practice to pull information form pathology reports that indicate good tumor specimens for genetic testing.
* Generates corrective action forms for non-conformance events, including investigating root cause, identifying or proposing corrective action, and reviewing with leadership.
* Perform other duties as required or assigned by supervisor or manager.

High school graduation or equivalent AND three (3) years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a full-service unit that performs FISH and Karyotype testing on all specimen types for constitutional and neoplasia studies. We are eagerly looking to expand our team to assist with the current caseload, increase our capacity to absorb fluctuations in specimen volume, including work from new reference labs. We are also developing new automated FISH techniques and are looking for someone to assist us with this development.
As a CLT 2, you will prepare specimens for cytogenetic and FISH analysis. You will make reagents, order supplies, maintain equipment and keep the laboratory stocked and prepared for specimens. You will also assist Cytogenetic Technologists and the Supervisor with quality control, quality assurance, and inspection preparation.

What you'll contribute:
Laboratory Skills
* Enter patient and laboratory information into Epic database with accuracy and with attention to detail.
* Set up and harvest cultures of cells using sterile/aseptic technique, maintaining appropriate labeling of vessels and slides.
* Perform CD138+ cell enrichment.
* Gather unstained and H&E slides for paraffin FISH cases.
* Prepare slides and perform special staining for microscopy.
* Prepare reagents for laboratory procedures using protocols, balance and pH meter.
* Perform FISH pretreatment procedures, apply FISH probe and perform FISH post-wash.
* Sterilize, or prepare for autoclave/sterilization, solutions, instruments and equipment.
* Clean laboratory areas and equipment; take dishes to dish room, wash Coplin jars, perform detergent reside checks on cleaned glassware.
* Use microscopy skills to compile cell information and capture and enhance images for analysis.
* Use reference material to troubleshoot and check results.
* Transfer cell pellets to smaller storage vials for long-term storage.
* Check CO² levels, change CO² tanks and order new CO² tanks when needed.
* Maintain a safe working environment by following laboratory policies and safety regulations.
* Assist in research cases and data recording.
* Check laboratory monthly for expired reagents.
* File slides.
* Advise technologists and supervisor about stock needed to maintain laboratory functioning properly.
* Help the supervisor and staff find proper vendors for some stocks.
Quality
* Read and record instrument data.
* Assiduously maintain patient and specimen information.
* Maintain equipment used in proper working conditions. Coordinate with supervisor to resolve problems with equipment.

* Assist in compiling data for Quality Assurance; check and record dates that AP/NP pathologist signed out FISH results, generate monthly poor growth, failure, amended Temptrak as well as AP/NP turn-around time reports.
* Assist the supervisor and specialists in preparing for CAP and other inspections.
* Maintain and implement laboratory safety procedures.
Administrative Tasks
* Accession patient, specimen and clinician information into Epic database. Select correct case types, fee schedules, assign CPT codes.
* Order supplies and organize documents related to ordering as needed.
* Print reports of completed cases, file patient folders.
* Perform all the duties of the Laboratory Technician.
* Perform related duties as needed.

**_$3,000 recruitment incentive for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team._** **Who we're looking for:** The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a **Clinical Laboratory Technician 2** with the **Cytogenetics Team** at the University of Washington Medical Center - Montlake.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a full-service unit that performs FISH and Karyotype testing on all specimen types for constitutional and neoplasia studies. We are eagerly looking to expand our team to assist with the current caseload, increase our capacity to absorb fluctuations in specimen volume, including work from new reference labs. We are also developing new automated FISH techniques and are looking for someone to assist us with this development.
As a CLT 2, you will prepare specimens for cytogenetic and FISH analysis. You will make reagents, order supplies, maintain equipment and keep the laboratory stocked and prepared for specimens. You will also assist Cytogenetic Technologists and the Supervisor with quality control, quality assurance, and inspection preparation.

**What you'll contribute:**
_Laboratory Skills_
+ Enter patient and laboratory information into Epic database with accuracy and with attention to detail.
+ Set up and harvest cultures of cells using sterile/aseptic technique, maintaining appropriate labeling of vessels and slides.
+ Perform CD138+ cell enrichment.
+ Gather unstained and H&E slides for paraffin FISH cases.
+ Prepare slides and perform special staining for microscopy.
+ Prepare reagents for laboratory procedures using protocols, balance and pH meter.
+ Perform FISH pretreatment procedures, apply FISH probe and perform FISH post-wash.
+ Sterilize, or prepare for autoclave/sterilization, solutions, instruments and equipment.
+ Clean laboratory areas and equipment; take dishes to dish room, wash Coplin jars, perform detergent reside checks on cleaned glassware.
+ Use microscopy skills to compile cell information and capture and enhance images for analysis.
+ Use reference material to troubleshoot and check results.
+ Transfer cell pellets to smaller storage vials for long-term storage.
+ Check CO² levels, change CO² tanks and order new CO² tanks when needed.
+ Maintain a safe working environment by following laboratory policies and safety regulations.
+ Assist in research cases and data recording.
+ Check laboratory monthly for expired reagents.
+ File slides.
+ Advise technologists and supervisor about stock needed to maintain laboratory functioning properly.
+ Help the supervisor and staff find proper vendors for some stocks.
_Quality_
+ Read and record instrument data.
+ Assiduously maintain patient and specimen information.
+ Maintain equipment used in proper working conditions. Coordinate with supervisor to resolve problems with equipment.
+ Keep records of quality control data provided with shipments of media and reagents.
+ Help obtain test reports from other laboratories.
+ Assist in compiling data for Quality Assurance; check and record dates that AP/NP pathologist signed out FISH results, generate monthly poor growth, failure, amended Temptrak as well as AP/NP turn-around time reports.
+ Assist the supervisor and specialists in preparing for CAP and other inspections.
+ Maintain and implement laboratory safety procedures.
_Administrative Tasks_
+ Accession patient, specimen and clinician information into Epic database. Select correct case types, fee schedules, assign CPT codes.
+ Order supplies and organize documents related to ordering as needed.
+ Print reports of completed cases, file patient folders.
+ Perform all the duties of the Laboratory Technician.
+ Perform related duties as needed.

Organizational Function and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for instruction in Medical Laboratory Technician at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels.
This position reports to the Department Chair in the School of Health Education.
Essential Duties:
The following duties are typically expected of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1. Responsible for instruction in the Medical Laboratory Technician program including but not limited to the following courses: Urinalysis, Basic Immunology, Basic Hematology, Coagulation, Intro to Blood Bank, Advanced Blood Bank, Advanced Hematology, Clinical Chemistry 1 & 2 Clinical Microbiology, and/or Molecular Diagnostics.
2. Develop and plan appropriate instructional strategies and alternative delivery strategies when appropriate including but not limited to hybrid, face-to-face and on-line course delivery.
3. Participate in in-service meetings, staff development trainings or other activities or programs requested by the Department.
4. Assist and advise students who have problems with assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other academic matters.
5. Comply with college policies and directions regarding student testing, record keeping, advanced standing, providing grades on a timely basis, evaluating student performance and maintaining office hours for student assistance and counseling, etc.
6. Maintain competencies as an instructor as aligned with the Faculty Quality Assurance System.
7. Assist students in developing work experience assignments such as internships, work study assignments, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Two (2) years (4000 hours) of related work experience in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences to include occupational related work experience as a medical technologist. (One (1) year (2,000 hours) of related work experience must be within the past five (5) years. This requirement can be waived for those having two (2) years of full-time equivalent teaching experience in related area within the last five (5) years.
Medical Technologist board certification as MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP) CM or equivalent, or ability to attain by time of hire.
Experience with or willingness to learn different modes of instruction (online, hybrid, Classroom Live, and modes of the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) years of Hematology specialty experience.
