US Sailing company history timeline

1897

The USSA was founded in 1897 as the NAYRU (North American Yacht Racing Union). Organized as a multi-national authority and sponsor for the sport of yacht racing the Union continued to grow.

1931

1931: Canada, which was originally part of NAYRU, formed its own Canadian Yachting Association (CYA)

1938

The picturesque yacht club was the perfect backdrop for the birth of the NBYA (but little did these “founders” know that the building would be swept away by a 30-foot tidal surge just six months later in the infamous 1938 Hurricane).

1957

1957: A trophy donated by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, was named for naval architect Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, began to be awarded annually

1975

January 1975: NAYRU changed its name to the United States Yacht Racing Union. (USYRU)

1991

October 1991: USYRU change its name to the United States Sailing Association, Inc. and began to do business as US SAILING.

1993

1993: US Sailing developed a comprehensive instruction program for adults to learn to sail in larger sailboats.

1994

Since 1994, TACS has provided sailing instruction and activities for over 4,000 area youth and adults in various programs.

2004

In 2004 Ben Ferris, our Camp Director, received the award for the Best Director of a Seasonal Community Sailing Program from US Sailing, the national sailing organization

2008

The Cornwell Sailing Center which will house the TACS fleet and better serve the community was completed in November of 2008.
