We are seeking a highly dedicated and experienced Heavy EquipmentOperator who will play a crucial role in operating heavy equipment with blade, bucket, and backhoe attachments for excavation, backfilling, and loading.
Responsibilities:
Operates heavy equipment (backhoes, bulldozers, skid steer loaders, trenchers, etc.) used in building construction, landscape construction, and utility excavation/installation/maintenance projects.
Observes and examines colored flags and ground markings indicating the location of underground utilities and structures.
Excavates to dimensions as specified by construction drawings, sketches, grade markers, and/or verbal instructions.
Performs backfilling and grading operations to specified grade. Loads flatbed truck, dump truck, or pickup truck with excavated soils or building materials such as stone, sand, aggregate, or asphalt.
Drives crew truck and tow trailer to transport tools, crew, and equipment to the site.
Performs preventative maintenance such as general equipment cleaning, checking fluid levels, lubrication, maintaining tire pressures, and changing implements or attachments.
Performs other grounds maintenance tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations, including their capacities and physical limitations.
Proficiency in operating various equipment, such as wheel or crawler-type backhoes, large and small tractors, skid steer loaders, trenchers, grader blades, flatbed trucks, pickup trucks, hand and portable electric tools, with the ability to excavate and move materials precisely.
Spatial awareness to understand your location in relation to the environment and the position of other objects.
Capacity to work safely and efficiently in the role.
OSHA 30 preferred, minimum OSHA 10 preferred.
Education and Experience:
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: Five years in heavy equipmentoperation.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
• Work is performed most frequently outdoors in weather conditions that vary from freezing temperatures to heat above 90 degrees, in wet and dry conditions.
• Work may be performed in confined spaces.
• Some exposure to odors, gases, dust and dirt may occur.
• The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud.
• Lifting and carrying 10 up to 60 pounds frequently is required.
• Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Reaching and lifting overhead is frequent.
• Standing, crawling, climbing, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and reaching a majority of the time.
• Work may include manual labor up to and including hand digging.
• Some Saturday work is required. Sundays are rarely needed.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with a good driving history. Prefer CDL driver's license with endorsements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance characteristics of light and heavy equipment used for construction and maintenance activities with knowledge of final grade techniques and routine preventative maintenance on motorized equipment. Operation and maintenance characteristics of primary hand and power tools. Applicable provisions that reduce operating hazards and enhance safety rules, regulations, and precautions. Ability to: Safely and correctly operate road construction and maintenance equipment using proper techniques. Understand and precisely follow both verbal and written instructions and communicate concisely and effectively. Reason and make sound judgments. Work independently and efficiently. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and officials, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public. Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity. Key Responsibilities
Operate heavy machinery including loaders, tool cat, skid steer, backhoe, asphalt pavers, and graders in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
Collaborate with team members to complete projects on time and according to specifications. Projects include:
Digging out damaged asphalt, patching potholes and street cuts.
Street overlay and crack-seal operations, concrete repairs on curb, gutters and drainage structures, placing and finishing concrete and gravel.
Plowing snow, sanding streets, and sweeping streets, gutters and sidewalks.
Actively plan for projects and take instructions from supervisors.
Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures on the job site.
Qualifications and Skills
Proven experience as a heavy equipmentoperator or a similar role, two years of experience is preferred.
Valid license to operate City vehicles and heavy machinery is required.
Must be able to obtain a CDL B license during employment, usually within six months.
Strong understanding of operational and safety protocols.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience in the public sector is preferred, or experience in construction or industrial settings.
Working Conditions

Supervisor Responsibilities
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operating a drill and associated equipment within the company guidelines and safety standards.
Must be able to demonstrate proper start-up and shutdown procedures.
Must be totally familiar with the operational capabilities of track mounted drills of the high-mast variety.
Demonstrate the ability to recognize unstable ground conditions as well as changes in the overburden being drilled and make necessary adjustments to maximize productivity and safety.
Effectively coordinate walking and drilling activities with machine oiler.
Coordinate the establishment of blast hole patterns with proper personnel.
Display understanding of air quality regulations as pertaining to drilling operations and comply with standards.
Operator must be totally familiar with the function of and problems that may develop in any structural or electrical component of the machine, and with the service and function of the on-board lubrication system.
Must be able to determine by inspection: normal wear, functional or structural fatigue which may not require immediate maintenance verses abnormal wear, functional or structural fatigue which may require examination by support personnel or immediate shut-down and repair.
Must effectively coordinate machine maintenance and service with electrical and mechanical departments, and with engineering and field supervision in matters of production related activities.
Assist in the coordination of maintenance, service and production activities with other personnel in a multi-shift team concept.
Completing day to day activities of drill operations including daily/monthly machine inspections, greasing, drill logs, and replacing bits as needed.
Repair drilling machines.
Participating in safety inspections, plant safety program, and follows company and MSHA safety rules and regulations.
Store blasting materials.
Aiding in the training of co-workers as needed.
Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
