2008

By 2008, “How-it-works” videos were some of the most successful pieces of content on YouTube and Common Craft became the first YouTube channel to make an official explainer video – one that described how Twitter works.

2009

They created a video about Google Wave in late 2009.

On Nov 16, 2009, Common Craft helped Dropbox, a small startup to come up with their own explainer video:

2010

In early 2010 Daily Planet Productions worked with Groupon to create a series of videos that explained their service.

Whiteboard videos of the 2010 era were sometimes as long as 6-7 minutes, the first explainer videos clocked in at 2-3 minutes, but now the trend is a minute or less with some as short as 20-30 seconds.

2011

In this 2011 whiteboard video Jonathan Mildenhall, at the time the VP of Global Advertising strategy and content excellence for Coca Cola uses whiteboard to explain how Coke will use dynamic story telling to double the size of their business in the new media landscape.

2012

Around 2012 companies started doing something new.
