At the end of its first year of operation in 1979, the total assets were $46,506.
By the summer of 1979, the Council of Vietnam Veterans had transformed into Vietnam Veterans of America, a veterans service organization made up of, and devoted to, Vietnam veterans.
But the VA did not admit that PTSS existed until 1979, six years after the last American soldiers returned from Vietnam.
Agent Orange contained several toxic compounds, including dioxin and 2,4,5-T. By 1979, the United States Environmental Protection Agency had banned the use of these compounds because of concerns that they were harmful to humans and animals.
The combination of the public's willingness to talk about the Vietnam War and the basic issues that it raised, as well as the veterans themselves coming forward, was augmented by the nation's dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in November 1982.
In 1983, VVA took a significant step by founding Vietnam Veterans of America Legal Services (VVALS) to provide assistance to veterans seeking benefits and services from the government.
In 1984, they received an outof-court settlement of $180 million from the chemical companies.
VVALS published the most comprehensive manual ever developed for veteran service representatives, and in 1985, VVALS wrote the widely acclaimed Viet Vet Survival Guide — over 150,000 copies of which are now in print.
In 1986, VVA’s exemplary work was formally acknowledged by the granting of a congressional charter.
An estimated 30% of Vietnam veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder during their lifetime, according to the 1988 National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study, the last time such a study was done.
As Vietnam vets began to reach retirement age in 2018, the Congressional Budget Office looked at their long-term prosperity.
Nearly nine million Americans served during the Vietnam War Era, and as of the 2020 Census, they are the largest cohort of veterans in America, with an estimated 6.4 million living vets at a median age of 71.
