Village of Tinley Pk company history timeline

1892

On June 27, 1892, the settlers met in the depot of the Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, and voted 34 to 24 to seek incorporation as a new village within Cook County.

Among the relics Tinley Park’s railroad roots today is Engine 1892, a centennial monument that stands at the first train station of the village.

1900

The village had a population of 300 by 1900 and grew very slowly until World War II. After the war young families from Chicago were attracted by the affordable housing.

1905

In 1905 the Diamond Spiral Washing Machine Company built the first factory in Tinley Park.

The pioneer factory of the Diamond Spirals Washing Machine Company was founded here in 1905.

1909

In 1909 an electric utility was created by local businessmen.

By 1909, the ingenuity of local businessmen had pushed them to establish the village’s own electric utility.

1953

The village was renamed Bremen in 1953 to reflect the presence of a huge German community that had emigrated there.

1997

Also, Tinley Park got its name from a neighbor of Tinley Park’s first mayor Henry C. Vogt Sr., who was named Samuel Tinley Sr. and also happened to be the community’s first railroad station master. (Source: Ken O’Brien, Chicago Tribune, 1997).
