However, in order to acquire tax money for community improvements the two subdivisions united in 1914.

By 1914, the two communities merged and the Village of Ardmore was incorporated.

1924

York High School was opened for Elmhurst and Villa Park students in 1924.

The St Alexander’s school was built in 1925 because he felt it was needed more than the church building.

1928

In February 1928, the club held its first library fundraising event at the Villard Theatre.

In August 1928, with 400 books, the Villa Park Woman’s Club opened the Villa Park Library in one room of the J.C. Sterett real estate office at 317 S. Ardmore, the northeast corner of Ardmore and Central.

Villa Park was still a sleepy little village in 1928 when the Woman’s Club decided to create a local library.

1929

In 1929 the post purchased the old Community Congregational Church for its headquarters.

Other developments in that decade were the building of a new village hall in 1929, the paving of Ardmore, Highland and Villa avenues, the publication of a newspaper called the Villa Park Weekly News, and house-to-house mail delivery.

Located in a former CA& E train station built in 1929, the Villa Park Historical Museum also serves as the Official Visitor Center for Villa Park.

Feeling the library should be tax-supported, the club vigorously campaigned in favor of a May 1943 referendum to create a truly public library, funded by property taxes and with a public board to oversee operations.

In December 1943, The Wander Company, owners of Ovaltine, donated $5,000 for books for the new library.

1945

In May 1945, the library was open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

In 1945, the library began providing “Information Service”, the forerunner of reference services.

1947

The Wander Company donated another $1,000 for books in 1947.

1951

An organization called “Library Friends” was created in April 1951, to support library needs and focus community attention on library services and facilities.

In 1954 the Woman’s Club was presented with an award by the DuPage County Board of Realtors for extraordinary accomplishment in the improvement and beautification of the community.

In 1954, the Friends of the Library created and made the first contribution to a property and building fund.

1956

In January 1956, she started the library’s first book discussion group, a Great Books group.

The library re-opened October 22, 1956, in the newly-remodeled church building at 305 S. Ardmore.

1967

In 1967, the state gave approval for a $160,000 building grant and the Library board held a referendum on April 18 to raise the rest of the money to build a new building on basically the same site as the building in use.

1969

The new building opened on August 4, 1969, and was dedicated on October 19, 1969.

The Ovaltine factory closed in 1988 after manufacturing the popular powdered chocolate drink for roughly 70 years.

1995

The Library could not maintain existing services on the lower tax rate, and by 1995 the Library was reducing services–cutting back on hours, freezing salaries, and holding small fundraising events to try to overcome some of the deficit.

2008

The Ovaltine 217’ tall Chimney stack was imploded on October 29th, 2008.

It will be opened in the year 2008.
